Job description

Job Title:Spanish Hispanophone Literature & Culture, FT Faculty CFS Professional

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Brigham Young University announces a search for a candidate to fill a CFS-track (analogous to tenure-track)teachingfaculty position. We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching complementsthe current profile of literature and culture faculty within the department. Initial rank will be consistent with qualifications and experience.

Position Start Date: 8/1/2027

Required Degree: PhD in Hispanic/Spanish literature, cultural studies, or equivalent. Foreign degreesacceptable. PhD in Portuguese, Comparative Literature, or a related field will be considered if the candidate can fulfill the duties/expectations of the position.

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience: Experience teaching Spanish courses at the university level. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English is alsorequired. The ability to teach Portuguese literature/culture classes is also highly valued although notrequired.

Duties/Expectations:

This professional-trackteachingposition has a course-load of 4-3-2 (27credit-hoursper year). Whileteaching faculty donot have a research/publication expectation, the successful candidate is expected to stay current in the field through various professional development activities and serve on departmental, college, and university committees. Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

1. Teaching(70%)

  • Teaching faculty teachninecourses per year(27 credit hours). These include a variety of courses at the undergraduate, including Introduction to Hispanic Literature, Cultures of Spain and Spanish America,Third-Year Spanish Reading, Grammar, and Culture,and/or other courses, depending onexpertise.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students.

2. Professional Assignment (10%)

  • The faculty member's professional activities should all complement their primary role as a teaching professor. It isanticipatedthat they willparticipatein academic conferences and workshops (at BYU and at other venues), sharing and learning best practices in teaching Spanish language, literature, and culture.

3. Citizenship (20%):

  • Teaching faculty lend service to the college, university, and profession at large, as well as contribute actively to the life of the department.
  • Facultyare expected towork in a respectful and collegial manner with all colleagues, including department faculty and staff, adjunct faculty,andstudentinstructors.
