Assistant Professor In Residence information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Professor In Residence, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Professor In Residence, you need advanced expertise in your academic discipline, a relevant doctoral degree, and demonstrated teaching or research experience. Familiarity with learning management systems (such as Canvas or Blackboard), research databases, and potentially grant-writing certifications are often required. Strong communication, mentorship, and organizational skills set outstanding candidates apart in this academic role. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality instruction, fostering student success, and contributing to the academic community's research and service missions.

What are some common challenges faced by Assistant Professors In Residence, and how can they be addressed?

Assistant Professors In Residence often balance a heavy teaching load with limited time for research, which can be challenging for those hoping to build a strong academic portfolio. Additionally, these roles may offer fewer opportunities for tenure-track advancement, so it's important to proactively seek professional development and mentorship within the department. Building strong relationships with colleagues and collaborating on interdisciplinary projects can also help foster a supportive environment and open doors for future career opportunities.

What are Assistant Professors In Residence?

Assistant Professors In Residence are non-tenure track faculty members who primarily focus on teaching, service, and sometimes research at universities or colleges. Unlike tenure-track assistant professors, they usually hold fixed-term contracts and may not be eligible for tenure. Their responsibilities often include teaching undergraduate or graduate courses, advising students, and participating in departmental activities. These positions are designed to support the university's instructional mission while providing flexibility in staffing. The specific duties and expectations can vary depending on the institution.

Job description

The Assistant Professor is a faculty member credentialed and privileged as an MD, with completion of an Ob/Gyn residency, and may have independent surgical experience necessary to provide a full-scope practice. As a member of the OHSU Professional Staff, the Assistant Professor practices in accordance with the relevant bylaws. The Assistant Professor is responsible for providing inpatient and outpatient clinical services as assigned by the supervisor, in support of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach, and public service. Compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, OHSU policies, and professional standards is required.

Clinical

  • The Generalist division provides both inpatient and outpatient care to high-risk patients at OHSU and relatively low-risk, community practice patients at Hillsboro Medical Center, an affiliated facility located 30 minutes west of OHSU, ensuring an ideal patient mix. While all faculty are required to maintain privileges at both sites, Generalists will primarily be assigned to one location. Each member is responsible for a fair share of obstetrics and gynecology call duties, some of which require on-site presence.

Scholarly

Education

  • This position involves providing clinical education to residents and medical students during their Obstetrics and Gynecology rotations. The Assistant Professor may also assist with the clinical training of nurse and APP trainees. As part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for educating learners in the outpatient clinic environment, the Assistant Professor will provide both formal and informal feedback and evaluation to learners working in obstetrics and gynecology.

Administrative

  • As an OHSU faculty member, the Assistant Professor will participate in division and department faculty meetings and serve on OHSU committees as required. Additionally, involvement in other activities supporting the goals and objectives of the division, department, or OHSU may be requested by the department chair or division head.

  • MD Degree
  • Oregon Licensure
  • Completion of an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency
  • Potential for Academic accomplishment
  • Board certified or Board eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology
