Job description

Specialty Medical Director - Companion Animal Specialty and Emergency

PetVet Care Centers is dedicated to improving the lives of animals and people by delivering exceptional and compassionate veterinary care at every stage.

Position Overview

You will serve as a Specialty Medical Director at the Companion Animal Specialty and Emergency Hospital (CASE) in Crystal Lake, Illinois, providing highโ€‘quality veterinary care and building relationships with clients and staff. The role requires residency training or board certification in Emergency and Critical Care, Small Animal Surgery, or Small Animal Internal Medicine. Leadership experience is preferred.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain a high quality of progressive veterinary care
    • Oversee and give directives regarding medical standards and quality of care
    • Set policies as they pertain to the practice of medicine
    • Work toward making various services work as one team
    • Recommend additions to the hospital inventory in conjunction with leadership
    • Budget for new equipment and provide cost estimates and ROI
    • See patients and handle clinical practice
    • Ensure positive communication with clients and staff, including proper transfer of patient care responsibilities
    • Review patient records for completeness and accuracy and use them to promote medical excellence
    • Appropriately manage controlled drugs
    • Approve requests for alternative drugs and supplies
    • Conduct regular doctor meetings
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager
  • Handle patient care problems, client complaints, and referral partner issues
  • Manage veterinary, client, and board complaints and recommend resolutions
  • Develop medical policies
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with state veterinary medical practice act, OSHA, and AAHA standards
  • Monitor DVM performance and production, providing coaching when appropriate
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for all staff veterinarians
  • Lead candidate interviews for potential DVMs
  • Identify new service opportunities that do not currently exist in the hospital
  • Own revenue and practice success by monitoring key performance indicators and working with the Hospital Manager to achieve positive results
  • Help identify and plan for upcoming operational challenges and temporary solutions (locum)
Qualifications (Required)
  • Veterinarian degree (DVM or VMD) from an accredited college or university
  • 1โ€‘year rotational internship (university or large referral practice)
  • Completed a 3โ€‘year, AVMA approved specialty in a clinical specialty
  • Achieved board certification in the chosen specialty (ABVP, CCRP); note that acupuncture does not count as it does not require a 3โ€‘year residency
  • Current state veterinary license
  • DEA registration
  • Strong diagnostic and clinical skills
  • Excellent surgical and dental skills
  • Ability to work well in a teamโ€‘oriented environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to providing compassionate and highโ€‘quality veterinary care
  • Effective communication with medical, hospital staff, and clients
  • Client communication skills with rapport building and clear explanations
  • Confidence and reassurance when dealing with stressed or suffering pets
  • Physical abilities: some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Pay Range

$180,000 โ€” $250,000 USD
