Job description

Under the supervision of the Terminal Manager, and in the absence of the Terminal Manager, or Operations Manager, direct and coordinate the activities of milk collectors, sampling operations and shuttle operations in the performance of milk collection and transportation. Monitor load readiness for dispatch from the distribution center and coordinate delivery times and instructions with the receiving locations, distribution center and backhaul vendors. Interact with customer employees, milk collectors, and other associated personnel to assure prompt and efficient movement of product while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements. Direct the response to interruptions in delivery schedules due to weather, road blockages, equipment breakdown and other unexpected occurrences. Trains and directly supervises the dispatchers, yard drivers, shuttlers, and milk sampling staff. Enforces safety and other applicable work rules. Coordinates the various yard services to facilitate milk sampling and dispatch departure schedules. Responsible for supervising all staff in the safe and efficient utilization of all yard equipment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise and perform all aspects of the terminal dispatch & yard functions including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Monitor status of deliveries in progress and maintain contact with contractors/drivers who are outside their window of delivery; advise receiving location of driver's ETA. Where feasible, reroute the truck in order to maintain on-time delivery schedule for downline stops
  • Where loads cannot be assigned to owner operators under contract to Company, assign loads to an approved third-party carrier
  • Prepare routing and delivery instructions for the third-party driver and present in-person orientation of third-party driver at the time the load is tendered
  • Where breakdowns occur during the delivery, support and assist staff to arrange response by a road repair/towing service; if repowering is required, determine the most expeditious means to dispatch a replacement unit and to facilitate the delivery
  • Utilize internet-based applications for monitoring, mapping, locating and/or calculating mileage distance or transit times
  • Utilize Company software to enter load progress and delivery data on a real time basis
  • Assist or stand in for the Load Planner as required, including matching loads to drivers in conformity with the Company's no forced dispatch policy; where loads go unmatched, determine means to incentivize a contractor/driver to take the load
  • Where loads cannot be assigned to owner operators under contract to Company, assign loads to an approved third-party carrier; prepare routing and delivery instructions for the third-party driver and present in-person orientation of third-party driver at the time the load is tendered
  • Assure that all required corporate and/or customer reports are timely and accurately completed and submitted
  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation of all equipment assigned to the Yard
  • Enforce rules of conduct, safety and attendance for Yard employees and administer discipline with the advice and concurrence of the Terminal Manager and the Human Recourses Department
  • Adhere to and enforce all ethical standards by which the Company operates
  • Maintain flexibility to work various hours and shifts depending upon the operational needs of the terminal
  • Perform all dispatcher and yard monitor functions in their absence

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Must have 2 or more years of trucking or related transportation logistics experience.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Experience in the supervision of dedicated fleet operations
  • Ability to learn the service area and delivery locations to coordinate driver's deliveries
  • Knowledge of warehouse and distribution operations
  • Supervisory experience dealing with employees possessing varied skill sets
  • Customer service experience preferably dealing with the time sensitive delivery of services

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Sedentary office environment. Exerts up to 25 lbs. of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work in an office, but may be required to spend a portion of the time in a warehouse, or outdoor trailer yard. Must possess ability to work nights and weekend where operations require.
