Job Summary
The City of Grand Prairie is looking for a highly motivated professional to be part of its Public Health Division as a Public Health specialist.

The Public Health Specialist will protect public health and the environment by ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local health and environmental regulations by conducting various health/environmental inspections, including but not limited to restaurant and daycare inspections, conducting public education activities, responding to citizen complaints, conducting disease prevention activities, and conducting environmental investigations.
Other duties include assisting with the administration of various programs and completing administrative duties. Working some weekends, after hours, and rotating emergency response are job requirements.
In addition to inspecting various establishments, the Public Health Specialist position is also required to perform vector control duties. This includes, but is not limited to collecting samples to test for the West Nile Virus and spraying to protect against the virus.
Essential Job Functions
  • Conducts facility inspections by observing practices, processes, equipment, records, and site compliance with federal, state, and local rules.
  • Participates in public education events and department activities in support of other programs afterhours and/or on weekends.
  • Performs environmental health inspections and complaint investigations.
  • Conducts and/or participates in meetings with designated staff, community meetings, interagency conferences, forums and/or focus groups.
  • Performs administrative duties and customer service support.
  • Responds to disease outbreaks and natural disasters including epidemiological studies and disease surveillance.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records of programs activities.
  • Provides guidance and assist internal or external customers on certificate of occupancy applications.
  • Conducts pesticide applications and maintain records of all activities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Health Science, Science Education or a closely related field.
  • Professional Sanitarian Registration. Applicant not already possessing a Professional Sanitarian Registration must pass the Professional Sanitarian exam issued by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and become a Sanitarian or a Sanitarian-in-training within six (6) months of employment.
  • One (1) year experience working in a public health/environmental health related position.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative connections with internal and external partners.
  • Work independently and on interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and other software applications.
  • Requires ability to obtain the following certifications within 12 months of hire date: Certified Pool Operator's Certification, Hazardous materials Management Certification, Registered Sanitarian or Sanitarian-in Training
Work experience may be substituted with a Master's in Public Health or a Masters of Science and a Professional Registered Sanitarian Certificate or eligibility for a Sanitarian in Training Certificate.
