Position: Navajo Language and Culture Instructional Support Coach
Supervisor: Multicultural Bilingual Coordinator
Work Site: Intercultural and Community Outreach Department
Summary: The Instructional Support Coach is a critical lever in improving Navajo language student achievement. The role of the coach is to build Navajo language teacher capacity and their understanding of Navajo language and culture instructional practices, as well as the Navajo Nation Content Standards curriculum and various assessments. The coach will oversee and coordinate on-site professional development, assisting in the deployment and maintenance of district initiatives as defined in the Navajo language and culture program. They will implement program goals and objectives, as well as perform a variety of administrative and technical tasks in support of their assigned area of responsibility. An instructional support coach will promote reflection, provide guidance and structure where needed, and focus on strengths, collaboration, and common issues of concern. S/he is responsible for ensuring high-quality instruction in classrooms through modeling, co-planning, co-teaching, and providing feedback to Navajo language teachers. The instructional support facilitator will demonstrate and model a passion for Navajo language and culture education leadership. This is not a supervisory position and does not involve the evaluation of teachers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Model lessons in Navajo language classrooms on a daily/weekly basis;
  • Support the instructional development of all Navajo language teachers in understanding Navajo Nation Content Standards curriculum and varied assessments, the Framework for Teaching, and data analysis;
  • Provide direction and coordination for the curriculum's implementation, ensuring consistency with the curriculum timeline.
  • Create an articulated schedule with the building administration.
  • Support Navajo language teachers and administrators in the use of data to improve instruction on all levels.
  • Assist Navajo language teachers with planning and pacing of lessons, the development of differentiated lessons, and the selection of best practices to meet the needs of their students.
  • Support Navajo language teachers by helping multiple instructional strategies/processes with teachers during planning times; provide and recommend resources, materials, tools, information, etc. to support classroom instruction and planning.
  • Informally observe (non-evaluative) lessons and provide feedback for a Navajo language teacher's professional growth and students' success;
  • Mentor and support new Navajo language and culture teachers with district instructional and program initiatives, which include the deployment of the Din Content Standards, data collection and analysis, instructional strategies, individual educational plans, classroom management, record keeping, and scheduling.
  • Submit a weekly coaching log and any pertinent data requests/coaching documentation, professional development, observations, support, and technical assistance provided at each school.
  • Collaborate with district instructional team, staff, principals, and school leadership teams in developing systems and processes for collecting and analyzing data, developing a school site professional development plan, and developing both the district and school's Navajo language and culture program;
  • Serve as a resource for teaching methods, materials, and cultural knowledge for staff members;
  • Maintain current knowledge and awareness of new developments and research in education and apply this knowledge when consulting with school sites; and
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:
Experience
  • Three years of related Navajo language teaching experience:

Education
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with

major course work in an educational field; master's degree preferred.
Licensure
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a level II teaching license and a 520 Native American Language and Culture Certification from the New Mexico Public Education Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic operations, services, and activities of the assigned school's educational goals;
  • Principles and practices of the school district's educational program development, implementation, and assessment;
  • Classroom management and disciplinary techniques and methods;
  • Knowledge of office operations and technology;
  • Principles and practices of curriculum development and implementation;
  • Principles and practices of educational research methods and procedures, program development, administration, and assessment for bilingual and native language and culture programs;
  • Principles of student growth, development, and learning, and application of Navajo language data.
  • Culturally and linguistically responsive methods and implementation.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching methods and resources for content areas.
  • Collect, analyze, and utilize assessment data toward student academic progress and instructional planning;
  • Recognize student diversity and assist in creating an atmosphere conducive to positive student involvement and self-concept;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities..

Physical/Job Requirements:
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, driving a District vehicle (valid driver's license and defensive driver training), traveling long distances, writing, typing, word processing, reading, researching information, and effective communication skills.
