Job Overview

The Landscape Architect leads the design and planning of high-end residential landscape projects from concept through construction. This role is responsible for developing creative, functional, and buildable outdoor environments that reflect the client's vision, meet site-specific requirements, and align with company standards. The Landscape Architect plays a critical role in design development, client communication, permitting, and coordination with the construction team to ensure exceptional project outcomes.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Lead the design process for custom residential landscapes, including conceptual design, schematic development, planting design, and construction documentation

  • Perform site analysis including field measurements, inventory, and assessment of existing conditions

  • Create detailed design packages including grading plans, layout plans, planting plans, lighting plans, and construction details

  • Prepare 2D and 3D renderings, sketches, and visual aids to support presentations and client communication

  • Serve as the primary point of contact with clients throughout the design phase, providing guidance and design expertise

  • Collaborate with sales, project managers, and construction teams to ensure design intent is carried through during installation

  • Prepare and review cost estimates and material take-offs for accuracy and feasibility

  • Oversee and assist in the permitting process as required by local jurisdictions

  • Ensure all designs comply with local codes, environmental regulations, and site-specific constraints

  • Mentor designers and assist with internal design reviews

  • Continuously research new materials, planting strategies, and design trends to keep the firm at the forefront of residential landscape design

  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited program

  • Active Landscape Architect license (State of Michigan or reciprocal)

  • 5+ years of experience in residential landscape architecture, with a strong design-build background preferred

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office; experience with rendering software (e.g., Lumion, Enscape) is a plus

  • Strong knowledge of hardscape construction, planting design, grading, drainage, and sustainable site practices

  • Excellent visual communication and presentation skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and confidence in leading client meetings and team collaboration

  • Exceptional attention to detail

  • Industry specific certifications such as CGIP or CNM are ideal.

  • Must possess superior interpersonal skills with clients and colleagues, and do so with excellent written and verbal communication

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites, as needed
