POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Terminal Manager supports the overall operation of the terminal by ensuring efficient freight handling, safe work practices, and high levels of customer service. This role works closely with the Terminal / Agency Manager to oversee daily operations, manage staff, and drive performance in alignment with company goals, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

Van-Kam Freightways Ltd. (Van Kam) is one of the largest regional carriers in Western Canada specializing in less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation. With 8 terminal locations across British Columbia, we fulfill shipments to communities within 1-3 days throughout BC and Alberta. Between our own resources and our partner network, our coverage extends beyond Western Canada into the U.S. and Eastern Canada


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations Management

  • Assist in overseeing daily terminal operations, including dock activities, dispatch, and freight flow.
  • Ensure timely loading, unloading, and routing of LTL shipments.
  • Monitor service performance, including on-time pickups and deliveries.
  • Identify operational inefficiencies and implement process improvements.


Staff Supervision & Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of drivers, dock workers, and administrative staff.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, and performance management.
  • Promote a positive work environment focused on accountability, teamwork, and safety.
  • Assist in scheduling to ensure proper staffing levels across shifts.


Health & Safety Compliance

  • Enforce all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings, inspections, and incident investigations.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to safe work practices.
  • Support the development and maintenance of the terminal's Health & Safety program.


Customer Service

  • Address customer inquiries, concerns, and service issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Work to maintain strong relationships with key customers.
  • Ensure service standards are consistently met or exceeded.


Equipment & Facility Management

  • Monitor the condition and maintenance of fleet, trailers, and material handling equipment.
  • Coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance with vendors.
  • Ensure the terminal facility is clean, organized, and well-maintained.


Administrative & Reporting Duties

  • Assist with operational reporting, KPI tracking, and performance analysis.
  • Maintain accurate records related to shipments, safety, and staffing.
  • Support payroll, timekeeping, and compliance documentation as required.


QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • 3-5 years of experience in the transportation or logistics industry, preferably in LTL operations.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of freight handling, dispatch, and routing processes.
  • Knowledge of applicable transportation regulations and safety standards.
