ASSISTANT HEAD TELLER

Department: Tellers

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Head Teller


Job Summary:

The Assistant Head Teller will manage deposits, withdrawals, and other financial interactions while providing excellent customer service for commercial and consumer accounts. The Assistant Head Teller will also manage other tellers within the office in the absence of the Head Teller, ensuring smooth and orderly operation of teller lines and related functions.


Supervisory Responsibilities: (In the absence of the Head Teller)
  • Supervises and manages other bank tellers as assigned.
  • Maintains sufficient, skilled bank staff by scheduling appropriate employees and providing ongoing training and cross-training opportunities.
  • Collaborates with Office Manager to conduct performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Reports bank drawer shortages and other discrepancies, ensuring that all differences are managed according to bank policies and practices.


Assistant Head Teller Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Conducts various banking transactions including cashing checks and accepting deposits.
  • Issues bank cashier checks.
  • Verifies important information including endorsements, dates, and identification, to cash or deposit checks and pay out funds.
  • Records transactions into banking system, producing computer-generated receipts.
  • Maintains proper currencies and coins in bank drawers.
  • Balances all monies in cash drawer at the end of each business day.
  • Calculates daily transactions using appropriate technology, which may include computers or adding machines.
  • Demonstrates a helpful and friendly attitude.
  • Identifies and capitalizes on opportunities to sell or promote new bank services.
  • Maintains the teller area to ensure the safety of all negotiables and confidential records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Assists the Head Teller with the following:

  • Assigns duties and work schedules to workers to ensure efficient functioning of department.
  • Continued training of employees in customer service and banking procedures in the teller department.
  • Approves checks for payment
  • Addresses customer complaints.
  • Examines tellersโ€™ reports of daily transactions for accuracy.
  • Orders money for branch from the Gadsden office.
  • Counts and records currency and coin in vault.
  • Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency of subordinates.
  • Prepares composite reports from individual reports of subordinates.
  • Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Above average knowledge of fundamental mathematics.
  • Ability to be trustworthy and act with integrity.

Education and Experience:
  • One yearโ€™s experience as a bank teller with little to no losses to the bank.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience working directly with the public is preferred.


Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • May need to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to perceive and interpret auditory and visual information to ensure safety and effective communication with customers, coworkers, and external contacts.
