Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Opportunity

Old Tabby Links at Spring Island Club is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and detail-oriented Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to join our Golf Course Maintenance leadership team. This position is ideal for a turf professional who is passionate about producing exceptional playing conditions while preparing for a successful career as a Golf Course Superintendent.

Working closely with the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents, the successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in every aspect of golf course management, including agronomic planning, irrigation and moisture management, fertility and pesticide programs, crew leadership, budgeting, equipment operations, and strategic decision-making. This role offers a unique opportunity to develop the technical expertise and leadership skills necessary for long-term success within the golf course industry.

Position Responsibilities

Agronomic Management

  • Assist in developing and implementing advanced water management strategies that promote healthy turf and exceptional playing conditions.
  • Monitor soil moisture levels, collect and interpret agronomic data, and assist with daily adjustments to irrigation and maintenance programs.
  • Assist in planning and implementing fertilizer and pesticide programs, including calibration, application, recordkeeping, and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluate course conditions daily and recommend modifications to maintenance practices to optimize turf health and playability.
  • Assist with irrigation scheduling and programming, including operation of the central control system and troubleshooting irrigation issues.

Golf Course Operations

  • Develop proficiency in all aspects of golf course maintenance and be capable of performing every task required to maintain championship-quality playing conditions.
  • Safely operate and train staff on all golf course maintenance equipment, including mowers, sprayers, spreaders, topdressers, rollers, and heavy equipment.
  • Assist with tournament preparation, cultural practices, and special projects as assigned.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and efficient golf course maintenance facility and equipment fleet.

Leadership & Staff Development

  • Supervise, train, mentor, and motivate maintenance staff while promoting a culture of teamwork, accountability, and professionalism.
  • Assist in planning daily work assignments and ensuring projects are completed efficiently and to club standards.
  • Promote safe work practices and participate in ongoing employee training and development.
  • Assist with performance coaching, problem-solving, and maintaining a positive work environment.

Environmental Stewardship

  • Support the club's environmental stewardship initiatives by ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and best management practices.
  • Maintain accurate pesticide application records and all required licenses.
  • Participate in continuing education to remain current with advancements in turfgrass management and agronomic practices.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and golf course maintenance experience.
  • Two to three years of golf course maintenance experience with increasing leadership responsibilities.
  • South Carolina Commercial Pesticide Applicator License or the ability to obtain one within an agreed-upon timeframe.
  • Working knowledge of irrigation systems, moisture management, fertilizer programs, pesticide applications, and equipment operation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, safety procedures, and product labels.
  • Knowledge of pesticide and fertilizer calibration and application techniques.
  • Valid driver's license.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions and involves exposure to wet and humid environments, moving machinery, airborne particles, and approved turf management products. The successful candidate must be capable of safely performing the physical demands associated with golf course maintenance, including lifting, walking, bending, operating equipment, and working extended hours as seasonal conditions require.
