What are Assistant FSOs?

Assistant Facility Security Officers (Assistant FSOs) support the Facility Security Officer in managing and implementing a facility’s security program, ensuring compliance with government regulations such as the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM). Their duties often include assisting with security clearances, conducting security training, maintaining security records, and responding to security incidents. Assistant FSOs play a critical role in protecting classified information and supporting the overall security posture of their organization. They often act as a liaison between employees and the FSO to ensure security policies are understood and followed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Facility Security Officer (Assistant FSO), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant FSO, you need a solid understanding of security regulations (such as NISPOM), security clearance processes, and compliance procedures, usually supported by a security or related degree. Familiarity with security management systems, government portals like DISS or e-QIP, and certifications such as the Industrial Security Professional (ISP) credential is beneficial. Strong attention to detail, integrity, and excellent communication skills help you effectively manage sensitive information and coordinate with various stakeholders. These competencies ensure the organization meets federal security requirements, maintains compliance, and protects classified information.

What are some common challenges an Assistant FSO might face when ensuring compliance with security regulations?

Assistant Facility Security Officers (FSOs) often encounter challenges such as keeping up with frequent changes in government security regulations, managing multiple security clearances, and ensuring all personnel adhere to established protocols. Balancing administrative duties with hands-on security responsibilities can be demanding, especially during audits or inspections. Successful Assistant FSOs develop strong organizational and communication skills, collaborate closely with senior FSOs, and regularly participate in training to stay current on evolving compliance requirements.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys operating at the intersection of security, compliance, and business operations in a fast-paced defense technology company.
What You'll Do
  • Partner with the FSO to administer Shift5's Industrial Security Program in accordance with the NISPOM (32 CFR Part 117).

  • Help prepare for and support DCSA security reviews, self-inspections, and internal audits.
  • Partner with IT, Legal, Facilities, and People Operations to ensure compliance across physical and personnel security programs.
  • Assist with badge access management, secure areas, alarm procedures, and physical security controls.
  • Monitor evolving government security requirements and recommend process improvements as Shift5 continues to scale.
  • Serve as a trusted security resource for employees, managers, and program teams.
  • Serve as the COMSEC custodian
What Success Looks Like
  • Personnel clearances are processed accurately and efficiently with minimal delays.
  • Security records remain audit-ready and compliant with DCSA requirements.
  • Employees complete required security training on time and understand their security responsibilities.
  • Classified contracts are supported without security-related delays.
  • Internal security processes become increasingly scalable as the company grows.
  • Strong partnerships are built across Engineering, Operations, Legal, IT, HR, and executive leadership.
What We're Looking For
  • 3-6+ years of experience supporting Industrial Security within a cleared defense contractor environment.
  • Experience supporting an FSO or serving as an Assistant/Associate Facility Security Officer.
  • Working knowledge of the National Industrial Security Program (NISPOM).
  • Experience utilizing DISS for personnel security processing.
  • Familiarity with DD254 requirements, classified visit requests, clearance management, and security education.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while exercising sound judgment and discretion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Active Secret security clearance required; Top Secret eligibility preferred.
  • Completion of DCSA Center for Development of Security Excellence (CDSE) Industrial Security courses is preferred.
  • Experience supporting Insider Threat, COMSEC, or Physical Security programs is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience supporting a high-growth defense technology company or government contractor.
  • Experience with classified facility operations and DCSA assessments.
  • Knowledge of CUI, ITAR, EAR, and export control regulations.
  • Familiarity with security management systems and automated clearance tracking tools.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent military or industry experience.

Base Salary: $90,000-$110,000 (commensurate with experience)

  • Employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Health Savings Account with annual employer contributions
  • Life insurance
  • Flexible PTO policy
  • Flexible work environment (based on security requirements)
