About the Department:
Film and Video Studies at George Mason University guides students in the creation, production, and post-production of fiction, documentary, and experimental films, as well as television, transmedia, and mobile and web content. Our interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree provides students with a foundation in film history, analysis, and theory; the business of the film industry; and independent and ethical filmmaking. Graduates go on to apply their skills on film sets, in corporate environments, and with community organizations. The Program supports a cohesive faculty and staff to carry out these objectives.
About the Position:
Film and Video Studies is seeking a temporary Office Assistant for the Fall 2026 semester . The ideal applicant is a fast learner and a team player who has experience working in an office and possesses background in higher education. The successful candidate will assist Film and Video Studies in day-to-day operations, help with the scheduling of classes, respond to office inquiries, process finance paperwork, and provide logistical support during key department events.
Responsibilities:
  • Answers telephone, take messages, and respond to inquiries;
  • Manages department email inbox, including referring complex issues to appropriate contacts as necessary;
  • Edits class schedules;
  • Schedules meetings, reserve meeting rooms, and keep calendars up to date;
  • Collects paperwork and assist with upkeep of department databases;
  • Assists with scholarship and award tracking;
  • Processes vendor payments and honorarium requests; and
  • Provides event support for Visiting Filmmakers Series, Best of Film at Mason Showcase, Arts by George!, and other Film events.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Strong sense of organization, with focus on details;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Capacity to collaborate with others, including working with undergraduate students;
  • Ability to multi-task on projects, and be flexible and creative; and
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 programs.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with George Mason University or another higher education work environment;
  • Knowledge of Banner, Patriot Web, Course Leaf, 25Live, Emma, and Hootsuite;
  • Strong background in basic design principles, style, and communication standards;
  • Editorial, persuasive, and copywriting skills;
  • Some interest in film studies; and
  • Event organization and execution experience.
