Job Summary:

We are seeking a Sustainability & Energy Manager to strengthen organizational capabilities in sustainable design, energy performance, electrification, and high-efficiency HVAC systems. This role focuses on internal staff development, client engagement, business development collaboration, and expanding sustainability-focused service offerings.

The ideal candidate will serve as the subject matter expert for energy modeling, decarbonization pathways, and advanced HVAC strategies while ensuring high-performance design outcomes across projects.

Core Responsibilities

1. Internal Staff Training & Technical Development

  • Lead sustainability-focused training programs for Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Commissioning, and Technology teams.
  • Develop concise guides and standards for Title 24, LEED v4.1/v5, CALGreen Tier 1/2, and electrification best practices.
  • Mentor engineers and designers on high-performance HVAC systems, energy modeling interpretation, and carbon reduction strategies.
  • Conduct quarterly sustainability training sessions covering new codes, technologies, and utility incentive programs.
  • Oversee QA/QC processes for energy models, sustainability narratives, and BAS sequence integration.
  • Represent the organization as a sustainability and electrification subject matter expert during client meetings, presentations, and workshops.
  • Develop compelling sustainability narratives for proposals and planning efforts.
  • Lead discussions regarding energy efficiency, electrification pathways, lifecycle carbon impacts, and ROI considerations.
  • Build relationships with architects, developers, facility owners, school districts, and municipal agencies.
  • Promote sustainability services through presentations, industry events, and educational sessions.

2.Business Development & Marketing Collaboration

  • Support Business Development and Marketing teams with sustainability-focused proposal content and interview preparation.
  • Identify key differentiators and sustainability strategies tailored to project pursuits.
  • Participate in fee strategy discussions and evaluate sustainability complexity and client expectations.
  • Collaborate on thought leadership content, conference materials, and social media initiatives.
  • Monitor evolving sustainability policies and market trends to support strategic growth initiatives.

3. Sustainability Service Growth

  • Develop and expand sustainability-focused service offerings, including:
    • Electrification assessments
    • Decarbonization master planning
    • Energy modeling services
    • EUI and carbon benchmarking dashboards
    • Sustainability commissioning support
  • Identify and pursue new clients seeking high-performance MEP design services.
  • Assist clients in developing long-term sustainability roadmaps aligned with operational and budget goals.
  • Evaluate grants, utility incentives, and energy-efficiency programs to improve client ROI and competitiveness.
  • Support sustainability-related revenue forecasting and market expansion initiatives.

4. High-Performance HVAC Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership for sustainable HVAC systems, including:
    • VRF + DOAS systems
    • Heat pump RTUs and hydronic heat pump plants
    • Heat recovery chillers and hybrid systems
    • HPWH and water reuse systems
    • ERV/HRV systems and energy recovery solutions
    • Central utility electrification strategies
  • Lead system selection discussions utilizing EUI, lifecycle cost, carbon impact, and resiliency metrics.
  • Ensure HVAC designs align with electrical and plumbing systems for electrification readiness.
  • Review BAS sequences to optimize energy performance and commissioning alignment.
  • Stay current with low-GWP refrigerant requirements and industry trends.

5. Standards Development & Innovation

  • Maintain sustainability standards, modeling templates, and design checklists.
  • Standardize QA/QC procedures for energy modeling and documentation consistency.
  • Research emerging technologies and evolving codes to maintain industry competitiveness.
  • Lead pilot studies and innovative sustainable HVAC solution initiatives.
  • Support development of sustainability dashboards and performance tracking metrics.

6. Metrics, Reporting & Accountability

  • Define and monitor KPIs, including:
    • Percentage of projects utilizing sustainable systems
    • EUI and carbon reduction metrics

Required Background & Skills:

  • Strong foundation in mechanical/HVAC engineering with hands-on design experience.
  • Working knowledge of Title 24, CALGreen, LEED v4.1/v5, ASHRAE 90.1, and electrification codes.
  • Experience with energy modeling platforms such as eQuest, EnergyPlus, IESVE, or Cove.tool.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering, commissioning, technology, business development, and marketing teams.
