Position Summary
The Behavioral Health Registered Nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to individuals experiencing mental health and behavioral health conditions. The RN collaborates with psychiatrists, physicians, therapists, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. The ideal candidate promotes a safe therapeutic environment while supporting patients in achieving optimal mental health outcomes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments, including mental status evaluations and risk assessments.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans.
  • Administer prescribed medications and monitor patients for therapeutic effects and adverse reactions.
  • Monitor patients for changes in mental, emotional, and physical health status.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to psychiatric emergencies, including crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment for patients.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, physicians, therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care.
  • Educate patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, coping strategies, and community resources.
  • Document patient assessments, interventions, progress, and outcomes accurately and timely in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and discharge planning.
  • Adhere to infection control, patient safety, confidentiality, and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain compliance with Wisconsin nursing regulations, organizational policies, and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing professional development.
Qualifications
Required
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Wisconsin Board of Nursing or eligibility to practice under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), as applicable.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong communication, assessment, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective during crisis situations.
Preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • One (1) year of behavioral health, psychiatric, emergency, or acute care nursing experience.
  • Advanced Crisis Prevention, CPI, or equivalent de-escalation training.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, if required by the facility.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, trauma-informed care, and recovery-oriented treatment.
  • Ability to establish therapeutic relationships with patients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong clinical judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR/EMR).
