Job description

Environmental Compliance Inspector
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Environmental Inspector to support infrastructure projects including both linear projects and site development projects. This role combines environmental field inspections, drone operations, and construction progress documentation.
The successful candidate will utilize drone technology to inspect environmentally sensitive areas, document project sites, identify existing site conditions, support utility investigations, and provide daily progress updates throughout the life of a project. This position will work closely with engineers, surveyors, environmental professionals, contractors, and project managers.
Key Responsibilities
Drone Operations amp; Aerial Data Collection
  • Operate FAA-compliant drones to capture aerial imagery, videos, and mapping data for various projects.
  • Perform daily drone flights to document project progress and provide aerial updates to project teams and clients.
  • Create high-resolution maps, 3D models, and digital terrain models.
  • Conduct pre-flight planning, risk assessments, and equipment inspections.
  • Maintain flight logs and ensure compliance with FAA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Manage drone equipment, batteries, sensors, and software.
Environmental Compliance amp; Inspection
  • Conduct daily environmental inspections of project sites, wetlands, streams, stormwater facilities, and other environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Monitor compliance with environmental permits, erosion and sediment control permits, and environmental regulations.
  • Document site conditions through photography, drone imagery, and written reports.
  • Identify environmental concerns and communicate findings to project managers and clients.
  • Proactively monitor for risks and challenges anticipated on the project site based on real time field conditions.
  • Conduct SWPPP compliance inspections in accordance with the NPDES construction general permit and coastal area permit conditions.
Project Documentation amp; Deliverables
  • Prepare inspection reports and maintain detailed and accurate project records
  • Produce daily work reports, progress reports, and construction progress updates
  • Produce daily environmental compliance reports
  • Produce daily/weekly/monthly SWPPP compliance reports
  • Maintaining an OS-SWPPP notebook for the duration of a project
  • Organize and maintain drone imagery, project databases, and project reports
  • Assist with preparation of maps, exhibits, presentations, and other client deliverables
Safety amp; Compliance
  • Follow company safety protocols and participate in safety training.
  • Ensure compliance with FAA Part 107 regulations.
  • Maintain drone certifications and stay current with evolving regulations and technology.
  • Conduct work safely in active construction zones and environmentally sensitive locations.
  • Wear proper PPE while on site at all times.
Required Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience in drone operations, environmental inspection, construction inspection, or related field
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
  • Experience operating commercial drone platforms
  • Proficiency with drone mapping and photogrammetry software
  • Experience in maintaining an OS-SWPPP notebook for the duration of a project and associated reporting requirements for inspections.
  • Experience in understanding the difference between major and minor modifications associated with an NPDES construction general permit.
  • Proficiency in understanding environmental permits, state and federal environmental regulations, permit special conditions, and project plans.
  • Proficiency in organized file management and file naming structures.
  • Strong understanding of GPS/GNSS technology and geospatial data collection.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, Geography, GIS, Surveying, Natural Resources, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Experience supporting civil engineering, transportation projects, utility infrastructure projects, and site development projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of NPDES and local MS4 regulations related to erosion and sediment control practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of wetlands, environmental permitting, or environmental compliance requirements.
  • GIS experience (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar).
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with environmental compliance inspections for transmission line construction
  • Experience with environmental compliance inspections for electrical substation construction
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk project sites, including uneven terrain and environmentally sensitive areas for a significant portion of the day.
  • Ability to lift and transport drone equipment and field gear up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather and terrain conditions
  • Must live near or be willing to travel to the project site, and travel across the Southeast
  • Must be willing to work the hours of the contractor for specific projects which include working overtime and on weekends.
