Dispatchers are responsible for communicating with drivers to ensure customers are provided prompt service in a safe and efficient manner.  This position receives and responds to customer calls regarding service requests and/or issues and inputs information into data base for all lines of business (Residential, Roll-off, and Commercial).  Dispatchers ensure routes are complete and assist with resolving customer issues and missed stops. The hours and physical demand may vary by location or line of business.

Responsibilities of Position:

  • Effectively dispatch work orders to drivers via radio or phone to customer sites to provide service to customers, primarily in the commercial line of business
  • Provide dispatch coverage for other lines of business during absences and breaks
  • Receive incoming calls from customers, customer service, and sales departments, and handle each with appropriate communication and action
  • Troubleshoot and resolve service, pick-up and/or delivery issues
  • Assist management with the daily activities of route drivers and ensure routes are completed by assigned driver or utility driver
  • Assign live loads to drivers based on designated route or driver locations
  • Dispatch work orders and perform data entry into computer system
  • Monitor drivers through Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system entitled GeoTab
  • Act as emergency contact for drivers and communicate with maintenance department for driver issues
  • Manage missed stops by working cooperatively with customer, drivers, and/or office staff to resolve issues
  • Assist with assigning and tracking daily work orders to drivers
  • Ensure drivers complete paperwork in accordance with DOT regulations and company policy where needed
  • Maintain and update route sheets
  • Assist with monitoring driver hours in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations as needed
  • Professionally interact with internal and external customers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position will not manage employees

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:

  • Must possess knowledge of service area, ability to read maps and give directions
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner
  • Knowledge of various lines of business preferred
  • Ability to handle a heavy call volume in a professional and efficient manner
  • Must be organized and detail oriented with the ability to multi-task
  • Possess proven analytical/problem solving solutions for the customer and the company
  • Computer proficiency in Windows and Microsoft applications; AS400 experience, a plus
  • Must possess excellent customer service and data entry skills

Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:

  • Waste industry (Roll Off, Residential and Commercial lines of business) experience preferred
  • 1 year of Administrative Assistance, or similar experience preferred

Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:

  • Frequently lifting/carrying a max of 20 lbs
  • Occasionally pushing/pulling a max of 20 lbs
  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 100 lbs
  • Rarely working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Rarely working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Occasionally stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
  • Occasionally climbing and/or balancing
  • Frequently sitting/standing
  • Occasionally walking

Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:

  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver’s license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
