POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.  The Assistant Director of Sports will report directly to the Director of Sports and will be responsible for the planning and implementation of several sports programs, volunteers, training and general sports support. This person will also be responsible for acting as the lead authority for the Sports Department when the Director is not present.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Will have responsibilities that tie to minimally three sports specific areas (ex: volleyball, soccer, short sports, physical education, and conditioning).
  • Supervise and evaluate staff using job descriptions and performance standards that reflect their assigned roles and performance area needs.
  • Responsibilities include Daxko program setup; league management; ensuring all equipment and supplies are purchased and in good repair for use; recruitment of coaches; uniform management; referee coordination; communication with outside leagues; parent and participant communication meetings.
  • Design and deliver training to coaches; includes curriculum development, tracking, and compliance of YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Manages sports volunteers in league/volunteer software including backgrounds checks, vetting and placement.
  • Assist in preparing annual operational budgets by providing detailed justifications.
  • Assure proper maintenance and cleanliness of the gymnasiums and all other assigned areas in coordination with the Sports Director and Director of Facilities.
  • Support YMCA special events and programs including the annual campaign.
  • Coordinate sports staffing needs with the Sports Director and assist in recruitment of staff.
  • Daily support for Summer Camp and other Youth Development programs.
  • Serve as an integral part of the total professional staff team or the YMCA of Frederick County
  • Utilize all existing functions of Daxko to efficiently manage all facets of Y sports programming including program creation, roster management, data analysis, and correspondence with program participants.
  • Maintain all written records and reports for activities and program as deemed necessary by the supervisor or association staff.
  • Maintain a clean driving record and transport program participants as needed.
  • Additional duties as assigned to meet the needs of the YMCA.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in Health, Physical Education, Recreation or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a sports or youth setting.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Basic computer and administrative skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the YMCA insurance carrier and have a Motor Vehicle Record acceptable to the YMCA.

  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills, capable of working effectively with staff members and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of youth sports issues, instruction practice, program creation and facilitation, community outreach, and budget and fiscal management.
