The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea is a multidimensional health care and housing facility first established in 1882. Our mission is to serve eligible Massachusetts veterans with dignity, honor and respect by providing long term and skilled nursing care in our long-term care facility and delivering comprehensive housing services in our domiciliary facility. The MVH at Chelsea is seeking a qualified Assistant Director of Nursing to join their team.

The Assistant Director of Nursing develops, implements, and coordinates nursing services for Veterans within the facility.This role provides supervision to Veteran Care Coordinators and Off-Shift Nursing Supervisors, evaluates the effectiveness of nursing services, implements quality assurance programs, maintains standards of care and ensures compliance with federal, state and professional standards and regulations, coordinates and provides in-service programs for nursing personnel. In the absence of the Director of Nursing, exercises full supervision over all personnel assigned to the Nursing Administration.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Assesses and evaluates nursing care provided in the Home under the management of the Veteran Care Coordinators (RN IVs)

Coordinates the clinical and administrative activities of all nursing staff within the Home, across three shifts, and ensures the continuity and quality of Veteran care.

Coordinates, develops and provides in-service education programs.

Recommends new equipment purchases and assists in the development and implementation of the Department’s annual budget.

Initiates and/or coordinates special projects to maintain and upgrade quality of Veteran care.

In conjunction with the Director of Facilities and Maintenance Department, inspects physical facilities to ensure compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations.

Analyzes statistical reports such as Veteran census, personnel changes, accidents, and time and attendance in order to recommend action concerning Veteran census, deployment of personnel and the effective use of available resources.

Provides direct and indirect supervision for nursing services personnel.

Coordinates, conducts, and participates in meetings, in-service and continuing educational activities.

In the absence of the Director of Nursing, exercises full supervision over all personnel assigned to the Nursing Administration.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required at Hire:

Knowledge of methods used in evaluating nursing practice.

Knowledge of the principals and practices of health care administration.

Ability to conduct interviews.

Ability to plan and conduct training in nursing.

Ability to prepare statistical reports.

Ability to communicate both written and orally in a precise, understandable manner.

Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of staff and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and or evaluations; determining staff’s training needs and providing or arranging for such training; and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.

Ability to establish rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds.

Knowledge of regulatory agencies involved in the long-term care arena, i.e. JCAHO, VA, DPH, OSHA.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions:
1. A Graduate degree with a major in nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.* *Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
