About the Position:

As an integral part of the Events and Facilities team, the Assistant Director directs and supervises the efforts of assigned personnel in the day-to-day building and grounds maintenance of the Field House and surrounding common areas. Responsible for all phases of maintenance, repair, and general service support of ICA buildings. Performs a full range of installations, maintenance/repair, and administrative tasks.

Responsibilities:

Preventative Maintenance and Repair

  • Develops and executes a daily, weekly, monthly, annual preventative maintenance schedule and repair/replacement plans (up to $15,000) ensuring safety and mitigating risk for student athletes, coaches, staff, visiting teams and guests for the following areas:
    • Field House and Track
      • Inspects whole building daily and repair or recommend repair as needed for leaks, lights, damage, recycling, trash pick up;
      • Inspects, repairs, or recommends repair or replacement as needed for indoor equipment - batting cages, nets, throwing cage, hoops;
      • Proactively brings repair/upgrade/renovation suggestions to supervisor;
      • Processes/tracks/follows up on work orders as assigned;
      • Inspects custodial work;
      • Assists with eradicating indoor pest issues;
      • Assists with office moves/upgrades/painting/branding; and
      • Assists with ice & snow removal.
    • Six outdoor athletic practice and game fields
      • Coordinates with coaches and staff to deliver an appropriately branded Mason Athletics environment;
      • Ensures each field is presentable and in superior practice and competition condition, free of debris, leaves, and hazards;
      • Inspects landscaping around building and fields; performs minor landscaping duties as needed;
      • Inspects and repairs windscreen on/near all game fields;
      • Procures physical athletic equipment;
      • Installs nets, windscreen, padding, fencing, and goals;
      • Repairs fencing where able and process work orders for outside repair as needed; and
      • Inspects and facilitates repairs to Press box/sheds.
    • EagleBank Arena Basketball Offices
      • Inspects and repairs or recommend repair as needed for office space and furniture;
      • Inspects custodial work; and
      • Assists with office moves/upgrades/painting/branding.
    • Cage Gym
      • Inspects custodial work; and
      • Assists with general repairs as needed and direct work orders.

Facility Rentals and Events

  • Prepares Field House and athletic fields for athletic practice, competition and club/intramural/ community rentals;
  • Supervises and assists with the setup and breakdown of all required equipment for onsite (Field House, Fields, Stadium);
  • Assists with offsite events as needed (RAC, EBA, Cage, and off campus); and
  • Be present for staff for events based on scope of event.

Motor Vehicle Maintenance

  • Maintains ICA vehicles, golf carts, and athletic trainer cart;
  • Repairs as needed in house, assessing when to send to auto shop or dealership for repairs; and
  • Maintains departmental process and records to check in / out vehicles.

Part Time Staff Management

  • Recruits, hires, trains and manages a staff of 10-15 part time employees;
  • Creates monthly, weekly, daily work schedule; and
  • Directs daily work of crew.

Snow/Ice Removal

  • Works with University Facility Services to ensure Field House and surrounding areas are free of snow/ice in a timely fashion to open building as directed and ensure safe ingress/egress of staff and student athletes; and
  • Procures products used onsite for snow / ice removal.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated experience assisting with facility operations, performing inspections, completing repairs and upgrades to indoor and outdoor facilities as well as office and administrative spaces;
  • Demonstrated experience monitoring and addressing preventative maintenance needs for facilities, equipment and/or vehicles;
  • Experience and knowledge in supervising employees/interns/student workers;
  • Experience and ability in working with a diverse group of people;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competency with computer hardware and software systems;
  • Working knowledge of relative NCAA rules;
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to lift and carry 100lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation;
  • Ability to work frequent evening, weekend and holiday events;
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, and rain);
  • Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review; and
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification from an accredited organization of the ability to obtain within 30 days.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field; and
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in the above categories including preventative maintenance and repairs and facility management.
