What is an assistant designer?

Although there are assistant designers in many industries, such as graphic design and marketing, in the fashion industry, an assistant designer works under the direction of a lead designer. You create and design new products or improve/modify existing products. Typically, a fashion house’s creative director develops a theme or structure to a collection. These are then interpreted by the art director and designers who create the actual look of each piece for a collection. Your duties are to sketch and design individual pieces, create color boards, and prepare tech sheets, which have the design specifications for the manufacturer to follow during production.

How does an assistant designer typically collaborate with senior designers and other departments during a project?

As an Assistant Designer, you will work closely with senior designers by supporting them in tasks such as creating mood boards, preparing technical drawings, and sourcing materials. Collaboration often extends to working with production teams, merchandisers, and sometimes suppliers to ensure design concepts are accurately developed and executed. Regular team meetings and feedback sessions are common, providing opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and contribute ideas. Effective communication and organization are key to thriving in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or similar software, and often a relevant degree or diploma in design. Familiarity with design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and experience with project management platforms is typically expected. Strong attention to detail, creativity, effective communication, and the ability to take feedback set successful candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting senior designers, delivering high-quality work, and ensuring smooth project workflows.

Both roles are common in creative industries like fashion, graphic, and interior design, but the Assistant Designer often involves more support responsibilities and collaboration with senior staff.

How much do assistant designers make?

Assistant designers typically earn between $40,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. In larger markets or specialized fields, salaries can be higher, and additional skills such as proficiency in design software may influence compensation.

What does an assistant designer do?

An assistant designer supports lead designers by helping develop concepts, creating sketches, preparing design presentations, and managing project details. They often use design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and collaborate with teams to ensure project deadlines are met. This role typically requires strong organizational skills and a basic understanding of design principles.

We don't simply furnish offices-we create environments that support culture, inspire innovation, and elevate the employee experience. We partner with organizations to design spaces that reflect who they are, where they're going, and how they want their people to feel when they come to work each day.
We're looking for a talented and driven Designer who is passionate about creating thoughtful, functional, and inspiring workplace environments. In this role, you'll collaborate closely with Workplace Consultants, Project Managers, Project Coordinators, manufacturers, and clients to bring workplace visions to life from initial discovery through final installation and project closeout.
This is an opportunity for a design professional who enjoys both the creative and technical aspects of commercial interiors and takes pride in delivering exceptional client experiences.
What You'll Do
Programming & Project Discovery
Every successful project begins with understanding the client's goals.
In this role, you will:
  • Partner with Workplace Consultants to review project scope, objectives, timelines, and client expectations.
  • Conduct client interviews and discovery sessions to gather programming information.
  • Verify field dimensions and ensure project information is accurate and complete.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Project Management to establish project timelines and deliverables.
  • Translate client needs into thoughtful workplace design solutions.

Design Development & Bid Support
You'll play a key role in developing creative and functional solutions that align with client goals and project budgets.
Responsibilities include:
  • Creating typicals, specifications, budgets, and design solutions based on client requirements and bid opportunities.
  • Participating in product evaluations, presentations, and bid responses.
  • Providing value-engineering options that maximize the client's investment while maintaining design intent.
  • Supporting Workplace Consultants during proposal and presentation development.
  • Managing outsourced design resources when utilized and serving as the primary point of contact throughout the design process.
  • Ensuring project deliverables are completed accurately and on schedule.

Final Design & Documentation
You'll take projects from concept to completion through detailed documentation and coordination.
Responsibilities include:
  • Developing final floor plans, furniture layouts, finish selections, and specifications using CET.
  • Presenting design solutions to clients and incorporating feedback as needed.
  • Revising designs and specifications through client approval.
  • Ensuring service fees, discounts, and pricing structures are accurate and aligned with project requirements.
  • Preparing and uploading proposals, drawings, specifications, approvals, and project documentation into EM1.
  • Maintaining organized and accurate project records.

Accuracy & Quality Assurance
Attention to detail is critical to project success.
Responsibilities include:
  • Performing detailed specification reviews and quality checks.
  • Coordinating peer reviews and double-check processes to ensure accuracy.
  • Revising and finalizing specifications before proposals are submitted.
  • Identifying and resolving discrepancies before projects move forward.
  • Maintaining a high level of accuracy throughout the project lifecycle.

Installation & Project Closeout Support
Your involvement continues beyond design development to help ensure a seamless client experience.
Responsibilities include:
  • Preparing installation packets for Operations and Project Management.
  • Participating in pre-installation meetings and project coordination discussions.
  • Attending site walk-throughs and punch-list reviews as needed.
  • Updating as-built drawings for project records.
  • Supporting installation teams and project stakeholders through final project completion.
  • Assisting in project closeout activities to ensure client satisfaction and project success.

Professional Standards & Continuous Growth
At Working Spaces, we believe great designers never stop learning.
Responsibilities include:
  • Adhering to company design standards, processes, and best practices.
  • Following company policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining accurate timesheets and expense reporting.
  • Participating in company meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
  • Contributing to a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

You'll be successful in this role if you are:
  • A creative problem-solver with strong technical design capabilities.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and quality.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
