How does an Assistant Designer typically collaborate with senior designers and other departments during a project?

As an Assistant Designer, you will work closely with senior designers by supporting them in tasks such as creating mood boards, preparing technical drawings, and sourcing materials. Collaboration often extends to working with production teams, merchandisers, and sometimes suppliers to ensure design concepts are accurately developed and executed. Regular team meetings and feedback sessions are common, providing opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and contribute ideas. Effective communication and organization are key to thriving in this collaborative environment.

What is the difference between Assistant Designer vs Junior Designer?

AspectAssistant DesignerJunior Designer
Required CredentialsAssociate's degree or relevant certification, some experienceBachelor's degree in design or related field, entry-level experience
Work EnvironmentSupports senior designers, collaborates on projectsExecutes design tasks under supervision, learns industry standards
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in fashion, graphic, interior design firmsEntry-level role in similar industries, often overlapping with assistant roles

The Assistant Designer typically supports senior designers and requires some experience or certification, while the Junior Designer is an entry-level role focused on executing design tasks under supervision. Both roles are common in creative industries like fashion, graphic, and interior design, but the Assistant Designer often involves more support responsibilities and collaboration with senior staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or similar software, and often a relevant degree or diploma in design. Familiarity with design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and experience with project management platforms is typically expected. Strong attention to detail, creativity, effective communication, and the ability to take feedback set successful candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting senior designers, delivering high-quality work, and ensuring smooth project workflows.

What Is an Assistant Designer?

Although there are assistant designers in many industries, such as graphic design and marketing, in the fashion industry, an assistant designer works under the direction of a lead designer. You create and design new products or improve/modify existing products. Typically, a fashion house’s creative director develops a theme or structure to a collection. These are then interpreted by the art director and designers who create the actual look of each piece for a collection. Your duties are to sketch and design individual pieces, create color boards, and prepare tech sheets, which have the design specifications for the manufacturer to follow during production.

What does an Assistant Designer do?

An Assistant Designer supports lead designers in creating and developing new products or collections, often in fields like fashion, interior, or graphic design. Their responsibilities typically include researching trends, creating sketches, sourcing materials, and assisting with sample production. They may also help prepare presentations, manage design files, and communicate with vendors or clients. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and is often a stepping stone to more senior design positions.

Job description

This is NOT a work-from-home position.

Are you ready to take your design skills beyond the screen and into the real world? At Blackout Graphics, we’re looking for a Designer who’s eager to see their creations come to life on vehicles, storefronts, and businesses. You’ll be joining a small, high-impact team that values innovation and creativity, offering you a real chance to grow into a larger creative role. Our supportive work environment and competitive salary packages are just the beginning of what we offer.

Here, your designs won't gather dust in a folder. Instead, they’ll be out there making a difference, helping businesses grow with impactful branding and large-format graphics. We believe in moving fast and having fun, without the usual corporate fluff. If you’re ready for a dynamic and rewarding design career, let’s make it happen together.

Compensation:

$18 - $24 hourly

Responsibilities:

What You’ll Actually Do

  • Turn customer ideas into clean, production-ready designs
  • Design vehicle wraps, banners, and signage
  • Set up files correctly for print (no guesswork)
  • Edit and improve existing artwork
  • Talk directly with customers (in-person, phone, email)
  • Keep projects organized and moving

Breakdown:

  • 40% Production/file setup
  • 40% Creative design
  • 20% Edits & revisions

You’ll Do Well Here If You:

  • Know Adobe Illustrator like it’s second nature
  • Understand print (bleed, scale, resolution—this matters)
  • Can design something that not only looks good, but gets attention and sells
  • Stay organized (your files make sense to other humans)
  • Can communicate clearly with customers and the team
  • Work fast without turning in sloppy work

This Role Is NOT For You If You:

  • Create messy, disorganized files
  • Can’t communicate clearly with customers
  • Only want to do conceptual “agency-style” design
  • Show up late or don’t take ownership
  • Struggle with feedback or direction

Qualifications:

This is NOT a work-from-home position.

  • Experience in graphic design
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, ensuring designs are production-ready and print-perfect
  • Ability to transform customer ideas into compelling, attention-grabbing graphics
  • Proven track record of managing multiple projects, keeping them organized and on schedule
  • Strong communication skills for direct interaction with customers and team members
  • Ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines without compromising quality
  • Understanding of print specifications, including bleed, scale, and resolution, to ensure flawless output every time

About Company

Why This Isn’t Just Another Design Job?

  • Your work is out in the real world, not stuck in a folder
  • You’ll see your designs on vehicles and businesses around town
  • You’re part of a small, high-impact team
  • Real opportunity to grow into a larger creative role
