Job description

Acuity is seeking a Systems Engineer on our Database Administration team. The Database Administration team is responsible for supporting Acuity's installations of Db2, Microsoft SQL Server, Postgres, and Hive across multiple platforms. They perform table and authorization changes on our databases, and the installation and maintenance of those database systems, either on their own or in conjunction with the Open Engineering - Data team. The Database Administration team supports both custom databases as well as databases provided by third party applications. They work with application teams to understand their data needs and with developers and data scientists to enhance and improve their query performance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Carry out the research, design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of our enterprise data storage software, architectures, tools, methodologies and best practices.  
  • Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues.
  • Monitor, optimize, and allocate physical data storage for database systems.
  • Develop routines to help end-users leverage best practices in database utilization.
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Further develop in-house database utilities.
  • Create database objects.
  • Develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies in conjunction with application development staff.
  • Design and implement database recovery plans that cover a wide range of scenarios from recovery of a single table, to the recovery of all databases in the event of a disaster.
  • Define and/or implement access controls to our data.
  • Educate Staff on new database technologies and practices.
  • Test new software products and releases as well as hardware devices.
  • Assist in establishing standards and trouble reporting procedures.
  • Assist in system performance monitoring, reporting and tuning.
  • Assist in the integration of multiple hardware platforms.
  • Participate in the Disaster Recovery plan and rehearsals.
  • Design new or revised architectures to include the software, hardware, and communications to support the total requirements and provide for present and future cross-functional requirements and interfaces.
  • Remain abreast of company and industry directions.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Computer Science, MIS or equivalent and continued field specific education.

EXPERIENCE:

3-5 years practical experience in computer operations, applications and/or technical support or information security.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A keen interest and aptitude for problem identification and resolution.
  • Full understanding of operating system hardware, software, network components, security, and/or database management system.
  • Ability to provide exact audit trials and recovery points during project life cycles to ensure maximum system stability.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with technical and non-technical system users and industry vendors.
  • Good listening ability as well as the ability to competently train others.
  • Willingness to respond to problems with little notice as well as to adjusting off hours scheduling to meet company project installation dates.
  • Be accountable and respond when reached out to for assistance during and outside of typical work hours, this may include participating in an off-hour call list.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $140,000 annually. This salary range is an estimate and the actual salary will vary based on applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
