Job description

Location: Corporate Office (Fort Wayne, IN)

JOB SUMMARYResponsible within assigned authority to evaluate, classify and price new and renewal church and related ministry business consistent with company established standards for growth and profitability, including accounts that are of large size and/or high complexity. Provide ongoing training to underwriters/assistant underwriters and assist the Regional Underwriting Manager as needed. Provide assistance to agents in resolving issues with existing policies and/or answer questions with respect to coverage existence or availability.

  • Evaluate, classify and price new and renewal church/related ministry accounts that include those of large size and/or high complexity.
  • Appropriately document all files so that other underwriters, department and company management, and external auditors can identify and understand action taken with respect to exposures, thought process, policy issuance, and pricing strategy.
  • Participate and/or lead teams, as assigned by the Regional Underwriting Manager, to research or solve departmentally identified issues, problems, or special projects.
  • Provide training to underwriters and assistant underwriters or others in the underwriting department.
  • Participate in agency visits and meet with prospects or current insureds.
  • Provide input to departmental and company personnel relative to agency performance affecting growth and profitability.
  • Work with Legal in developing manuscript and new coverage forms to address current and prospective policyholder needs.
  • Arrange reinsurance as needed in accordance with the company’s retention, catastrophe, concentration, and treaty/facultative arrangements.
  • Report any marketplace, customer trends, or state specific underwriting requirements that may positively or negatively impact the company and/or its target niche, and contribute to development of corresponding underwriting guidelines.
  • Negotiate underwriting issues with agents within established guidelines. Effectively and professionally communicate underwriting positions with agents in a positive manner.
  • Effectively prioritize, process, and manage workflows within the region to meet or exceed established service standards for agents and policyholders.
  • Assist regional managers with reviewing underwriter referrals, developing state strategies, and developing agency relationships and strategies.
  • Contribute to the development/maintenance of the Underwriting Resource Center.
  • Complete other projects as assigned.

  • Must have demonstrated proficiency in basic math and professional writing competency.
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency in using computers and business software applications.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of Property and Casualty insurance rating systems, underwriting principles, practices, reinsurance concepts, and policy coverage forms.
  • Must be able to analyze various sources of information and make sound decisions relative to policy pricing and coverage that will lead to profitable business being acquired by the company.

  • Must have strong analytical, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to effectively and professionally communicate complex concepts both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to develop creative solutions to problems and be comfortable working in a dynamic environment.

  • Must be able to develop and train underwriters, assistant underwriters, and other underwriting staff.
  • Effectively interface with external contacts, Brotherhood employees, managers, and department staff members.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEList Degree Requirement, Years' Experience, and Certifications

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Must have CPCU, CIC, or other relevant insurance coursework.
  • Must have four to six years commercial underwriting experience.
  • Six or more years of Property/Casualty commercial underwriting or insurance-related experience is desired.
  • Knowledge of building construction and/or valuation is desired.
  • Experience in training of underwriters or other underwriting staff is desired.
