Assistant Fund Controller | Boston, MA | Private Equity

 

Our team is working with a leading Private Equity fund based in Boston looking to hire an Assistant Controller to their growing team. The Assistant Controller will oversee fund accounting and financial reporting for private equity funds, co-investment vehicles, and continuation funds, managing quarterly close processes, financial statements, capital activity, and annual audits while ensuring compliance with GAAP and partnership agreements. Responsibilities include overseeing third-party fund administrators, supporting treasury and investment transactions, coordinating tax and regulatory reporting, and maintaining strong internal controls across fund operations. The position partners closely with finance, legal, tax, investment, and investor relations teams to support investor reporting, respond to stakeholder requests, and ensure operational excellence. Additionally, the role drives process improvements, automation, and the adoption of modern technologies to enhance efficiency, scalability, and the overall effectiveness of the finance function.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage accounting and reporting for private equity funds, co-investment vehicles, and continuation funds, including the annual partnership audit process.

  • Partner with and oversee third-party fund administrators on the maintenance of the general ledger, journal entries, quarterly closings, bank reconciliations, supporting schedules, and trial balances.

  • Prepare and review quarterly and annual financial statements and supporting schedules, including partner capital account balances.

  • Manage capital calls, distributions, reserves, and related investor reporting.

  • Ensure compliance with partnership agreements, accounting policies, and GAAP standards.

  • Support treasury operations for investment transactions, including purchases, sales, and restructurings.

  • Assist with tax reporting deliverables and collaborate with internal tax teams.

  • Support regulatory compliance activities including SEC reporting and documentation.

  • Maintain strong internal controls and documentation for accounting processes.

  • Respond to investor inquiries and internal stakeholder requests.

  • Identify opportunities to automate accounting and reporting processes using modern tools and AI technologies.

  • Promote a technology-forward culture within the finance team through training and process improvements.

  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve operational efficiency.

  • Collaborate across finance, legal, tax, and investment teams to improve cross-functional processes.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA strongly preferred

  • 6-10 years of experience in private equity, partnership accounting, or financial services.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and partnership accounting.

  • Experience working with external auditors, administrators, and investment teams.

  • Experience with fund accounting systems and financial reporting platforms.

  • Familiarity with automation tools, data analytics platforms, and workflow optimization

  • Exposure to AI tools for financial analysis, data processing, or reporting automation preferred.
