Job description
The Well located on the Sacramento State campus is seeking to hire five Climbing Wall Attendants. This position is responsible for the general superivision of the climbing wall, instruction of patrons in proper climbing safety and technique, and assist in group facilitation. The Climbing Wall Attendant should be able to introduce and mitigate risks to new members to the climbing wall and assist with customer service-related operations with members.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check, educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript), or driver clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow employees to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one college or center per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
Prerequisites
Students working at the University Union or The WELL must be attending classes at Sacramento State during the regular term (Fall, Spring), and enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) semester units for undergraduate students or six (6) semester units for graduate students.

Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 20 hours per work week (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per work week during breaks; (winter, spring & summer).
Compensation
$17.15 per hour
Minimum Qualifications
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Desire to work in Recreation and as part of a team.
- Must be top rope and lead belay certified (can complete within 60 days of hire).
- Reliable; able to work under general supervision and make occasional independent decisions.
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to adhere to workplace rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively.
- Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification (can complete within 60 days of hire).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous climbing experience.
- AMGA or PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor Certification.
- Background in experiential education.
- Background in sports and/or recreation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- To practice and demonstrate safe belaying and climbing practices according to those put forth by the climbing coordinator, as well as industry standards and best practices.
- To provide a safe and fun climbing experience for the patrons of the climbing wall.
- Complete correct opening and closing procedures of the climbing wall.
- Complete proper climbing wall equipment and safety checks.
- Communicate effectively with staff, participants and spectators.
- Respond to injuries and emergencies; activate the emergency action plan.
- Attend pre-semester training and all-staff meetings throughout the semester.
- Attend all climbing/facilitation in-service trainings as required.
- Foster professional standards among staff, including proper attire.
- Be able to address customer service-related questions or concerns in a positive manner.
- Assist with proper completion of Incident and Accident reports.
- Assist in full set-up and breakdown of events, including participation counts and survey tabulation where necessary.
- Quickly and accurately assess the skill level of new belayers.
- Ability to function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; ability to lift 50 pounds; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed either in a gym or office environment or a combination of the two. Continuous contact with staff and patrons. Frequent contact with the campus community and the public.
