Their primary responsibilities include welcoming customers, checking receipts, monitoring for suspicious activity, and helping deter theft or shoplifting. They act as a visible deterrent to potential thieves and often collaborate with other security or loss prevention staff. In addition to security duties, they also provide a positive first and last impression for customers entering or leaving the store.

How does an asset protection greeter typically collaborate with store management and security teams?

Asset Protection Greeters work closely with both store management and dedicated security personnel to ensure a safe and welcoming shopping environment. They communicate regularly with managers about potential security concerns and are often the first point of contact when suspicious activity is observed. Greeters also assist in implementing store policies related to loss prevention and may participate in team meetings to discuss recent incidents or updates. This collaborative approach helps maintain a strong security presence while ensuring customer interactions remain positive.

A story about innovations and traditions…about inspiring stores and irresistible products…about the excitement of the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, and the wonder of the Thanksgiving Day Parade. We’ve been part of memorable moments and milestones for countless customers and colleagues. Those stories are part of what makes this such a special place to work.

Job Overview

As an Asset Protection Detective, you will help protect company assets, reduce shortage, and support a safe, customer-focused shopping environment. Using surveillance, investigative tools, and strong partnerships with store teams and law enforcement, you will identify and respond to theft, recover merchandise, and help protect our customers, colleagues, and business.

Why This Role Matters

Asset Protection Detectives play an important role in reducing loss while maintaining a safe and welcoming store environment. Through training, observation, investigation, and de-escalation, this role helps protect company assets, support colleagues, and ensure customers can shop with confidence.

Full-time colleagues are typically scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week, while part-time colleagues are typically scheduled 12-24 hours per week. All schedules contain weekend shifts as part of the requirements. Hours are dependent on business needs and colleague availability. Information regarding hours per week needed for benefit eligibility purposes can be found here.

What To Expect

  • Prepare clear documentation, statements, and evidence to support investigations, audits, and legal proceedings.

  • Support team readiness by training colleagues on protocols that help protect company assets.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Use surveillance techniques to support the apprehension of shoplifters and dishonest employees, while following company policies and legal requirements.

  • Recover stolen merchandise and provide statements, evidence, and documentation to support investigations.

  • Prepare timely and accurate reports related to theft incidents, investigations, audits, and assigned activities.

  • Build strong partnerships with store colleagues, Asset Protection leaders, and law enforcement to support investigations and shortage reduction.

  • Maintain compliance with company policies and legal standards related to apprehensions, searches, and evidence preservation.

  • Testify in court for criminal and civil cases, as needed.

  • Respond to alarm calls, support special assignments, and facilitate first aid for customers and colleagues when needed.

  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships with colleagues, customers, and communities.
