Job description

The Department of War's Research and Engineering (R&E) organization serves as the Department's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and is charged with ensuring the technological superiority of the United States military.  Located at the Mark Center in Alexandria, the team works with Pentagon stakeholders and service PEOs.  American Systems is seeking a safety-experienced engineering professional to drive safety policy implementation and reviews within R&E. 


WANTED: A Lead Engineer with demonstrated experience in an engineering discipline and having significant emphasis on System Safety Engineering within DoW. 

  • Develop an expert understanding of key DoW safety policies such as those captured in MIL-STD-882E, DoDI 5000.69, DoDD 3000.09 and others.
  • Provide insight and expertise on the impact of safety policies on warfighter capabilities and the transformation of the DoW acquisition system.
  • Lead the organization's conduct of safety-focused assessments such as System Safety and Environmental Safety and Occupational Health technical assessments; provide recommendations to improve program/project outcomes and which support DoW modernization priorities. 
  • Support R&E Independent Technical Risk Assessments (ITRAs) analyzing safety-related issues within programs/projects and appropriate alignment with transformation goals, policy, guidance, standards, and best practices.
  • Provide recommendations and support for OUSW(R&E) to advance the practice of System Safety Engineering, including innovative approaches and emerging technologies (artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomy, uncrewed systems) to identify data and analytic technics for evidence-based assessments and decisions.
  • The Contractor shall propose updates and changes that improve System Safety acquisition lifecycle outcomes, integrated with the Defense Acquisition System.
  • Participate in and support activities of OUSW(R&E), or on its behalf with external partners, for System Safety Engineering to identify advancements, lessons learned and best practices, and promulgate them through direct interaction with OUSW(R&E) customers.
  • Lead reviews of OUSW(R&E) modernization priorities and related technologies, legislation, policies, procedures, practices, guidance, standards, handbooks, tools, and DoD workforce skills and practices.
  • Prepare materials for Weapons Systems Review Boards and prepare programs and products for the Joint Services Weapons System Review Process in accordance with DoDI 5000.69 or DoDD 3000.09.
  • Typical tasks may also include:
  • Assist in development of Program/Project safety plans.
  • Create and manage a data-focused Hazard Tracking System.
  • Work with program/project digital engineering artifacts to support safety-related analyses.

  • BS degree in an engineering, scientific, or technical discipline that is relevant to engineering.
  • Minimum of 11-12 years related engineering experience including emphasis on System Safety Engineering. Experience providing technical expertise working with DoW as a System Safety Engineer while applying MIL-STD-882E requirements and tasks to product lifecycle activities.
  • Desired:
    • One active professional certification, valid credential, or demonstrable combination of on-the-Job and coursework related to System Safety Engineering. Experience providing technical expertise in software safety engineering, fuze safety, munitions and energetics safety or test range safety.

Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors permitted by law.
