Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions: Performs manual tasks involved in the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of asphalt and composite streets including but not limited to: large and small roadway base repairs, shoulder repairs, level ups, walkways, driveways, joint and crack sealing, potholes and street patching. Operates such equipment as a jackhammer, air compressor, chop saw, chain saw, gas detector, hand tools, 2-yard dump truck and replenishes supplies. Must be able to use asphalt tools, rake, shovel, walk behind pavement saw, large and small roller, asphalt paver. Must be able to operate haul truck, dump truck, asphalt distributor truck and backhoe. Depending on assignment, must have knowledge of applying asphalt primers and tac coats. May supervise employees and must have the ability to deal with citizens.
Other Job Functions: Light vehicle maintenance; clean tools, wash vehicles, perform other duties as requested. Working Conditions
This position requires 100% on-site work. Works outside in all kinds of weather including extreme cold, heat and temperature swings, is exposed to extreme and constant noise; works in trenches/ditches and manholes; is exposed to mechanical and explosive hazards; exposed to fumes/odors, dust/mites, chemicals, and gas vapors. Must be available to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Must be available to work extended hours as needed. Subject to 24 hour call out. This position is considered essential during emergency situations.
Minimum Essential Qualifications
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of manual tasks required for area of work assignment including knowledge of asphalt raking and/or concrete finishing techniques and knowledge of setting grades; knowledge of laser level equipment; knowledge of safety procedures; and basic knowledge of construction procedures preferred.
Skills/Abilities: Considerable skill in the use and operation of hand and power tools such as concrete saws, chain saws, shovels, picks, jack hammers and rakes as well as other equipment applicable to assignments; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and during unfavorable weather conditions; ability to read and write; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to interpret maps and sketches; ability to operate laser; ability to repair concrete and rake asphalt; ability to make simple mathematical calculations; ability to make decisions and plan job tasks.
Physical Requirements: Constantly sees and hears; frequently carries objects weighing up to 50 lbs., drags, pulls, pushes, lifts objects up to 100 lbs., squats, stands, stoops, kneels, twists body, walks, climbs, drives vehicles and writes by hand; infrequently crawls and sits.
Education/Experience: high school graduate or equivalent preferred. Minimum of 2-4 years' experience performing tasks associated with the maintenance and repair of asphalt streets, drainage and related facilities, including grade elevations and asphalt finishing.
