West Michigan Aviation Academy is currently seeking a Part Time ASL Interpreter. 11:40-3:00, 2-3 times per week
Candidate must be registered through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Qualified Interpreter Program and hold an approved educational credential like the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 4.0 or higher, a Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification, or a Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) credential.

Job Summary
The American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter facilitates effective communication between Deaf or hard of hearing students and the school community by providing accurate and impartial interpretation services. This position supports equitable access to instructional content, school activities, and educational opportunities while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to professional standards of interpreting. The ASL Interpreter collaborates with educators, families, and support staff to promote student success and inclusion.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
Provide accurate and effective interpretation between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) in classroom instruction, school meetings, assemblies, extracurricular activities, field trips, and other school-related events.
Facilitate communication between Deaf or hard of hearing students and teachers, staff, peers, and families while maintaining the integrity and intent of all communication.
Interpret in a professional, impartial, and confidential manner in accordance with established ethical standards.
Collaborate with teachers and school staff to prepare for instructional activities and ensure students have equitable access to educational content.
Assist in promoting student independence while avoiding instructional or disciplinary responsibilities outside the interpreter's role.
Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and other student support meetings as assigned.
Maintain familiarity with classroom vocabulary, instructional materials, and subject-specific terminology to ensure accurate interpretation.
Support communication during emergency drills, school events, testing, and other educational activities.
Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with FERPA, school policies, and professional ethics.
Participate in professional development activities to maintain and enhance interpreting skills and knowledge.
Maintain effective communication with students, families, teachers, administrators, and support staff.
Regular and predictable attendance.
Cognitive Demands:
Interpret complex educational content accurately and in real time.
Maintain sustained concentration during extended periods of interpretation.
Exercise sound judgment while maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
Adapt interpreting methods based on student communication preferences and educational needs.

Physical Demands:
Frequently sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the school environment.
Frequently use hands, arms, and upper body to perform expressive and receptive sign language interpretation.
Occasionally lift or move materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
Travel throughout the school campus to support students in various instructional settings.
Withstand moderate noise levels in classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and school events.
Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language, Interpreter Training, Deaf Studies, Education, or a related field preferred.
Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
Certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf preferred or eligibility to obtain certification in accordance with state or district requirements.
Previous experience interpreting in an educational setting is preferred.
Knowledge of Deaf culture, educational terminology, and interpreting best practices.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professionalism in all interactions.
Ability to meet all applicable state, district, and school employment requirements, including successful completion of required background checks.
