What is an AS400 software engineer?

An AS400 Software Engineer is a professional who specializes in developing, maintaining, and supporting applications on the IBM AS400 (now known as IBM i) midrange computer system. They typically work with languages like RPG, COBOL, and CL, and are responsible for ensuring that business-critical applications run efficiently and securely on the AS400 platform. Their role may also include system integration, troubleshooting, and upgrading legacy systems to meet modern business requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AS400 software engineer?

To thrive as an AS400 Software Engineer, you need expertise in RPG, COBOL, or CL programming, a solid understanding of IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, and relevant computer science or IT qualifications.
