What is an AS400 software engineer?

An AS400 Software Engineer is a professional who specializes in developing, maintaining, and supporting applications on the IBM AS400 (now known as IBM i) midrange computer system. They typically work with languages like RPG, COBOL, and CL, and are responsible for ensuring that business-critical applications run efficiently and securely on the AS400 platform. Their role may also include system integration, troubleshooting, and upgrading legacy systems to meet modern business requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AS400 software engineer?

To thrive as an AS400 Software Engineer, you need expertise in RPG, COBOL, or CL programming, a solid understanding of IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, and relevant computer science or IT qualifications. Familiarity with tools like IBM DB2, SQL, and version control systems, as well as certifications in IBM Power Systems or related areas, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you address complex business needs and work collaboratively with stakeholders. These skills ensure the development and maintenance of robust, reliable enterprise applications on AS400 platforms, supporting critical business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by AS400 software engineers when integrating legacy systems with modern technologies?

AS400 Software Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating legacy IBM i systems with newer platforms, such as ensuring compatibility with web services, handling data migration, and maintaining system security. These integrations require a strong understanding of both the legacy environment and modern programming interfaces (APIs), as well as careful planning to minimize disruption to business operations. Collaborative work with infrastructure, network, and application teams is common to address these challenges and ensure seamless interoperability.
