Job Description
The Meruelo Family Center for Career Development ("CCD") prepares students for lifelong career readiness by guiding them to discern, pursue, and achieve career goals that align with their values, interests, and skills. The CCD aspires to unite the Notre Dame community to inspire and prepare every student to pursue a life of impact and purpose.
The Assistant Director plays a mission-critical role in the CCD. The Assistant Director is accountable for ensuring every undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters is actively engaged in career development activities. This includes tracking engagement, strategically partnering with faculty and administrators, creating best-in-class resources, meeting with students, and implementing tailored programs. The Assistant Director provides career advising, guidance, and consulting to undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters pursuing any career path, including employment, advanced degrees, service, and other pursuits. This includes working with students in conducting job/internship searches, preparing resumes and cover letters, and mock interviews. The Assistant Director serves as a member of the Center for Career Development team through teamwork and collaboration across all department functional areas of the CCD. Specific responsibilities include:
CAREER ADVISING AND CONSULTATION - Conduct individual and group student appointments related to all career development topic needs, primarily career discernment. Advise students on various career paths, skills development, internship/full-time job search strategies, interview techniques, etc.
RESOURCE CREATION AND REFINEMENT - Research, develop, and implement best-in-class resources to ensure every undergraduate student in the College of Arts and Letters is equipped to manage their career development. This includes collaboration with CCD staff, employers, and alumni.
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AND ENGAGEMENT - Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure every undergraduate student in the College of Arts and Letters is connected to the most appropriate career development resources, whether offered through the Center for Career Development, the respective programs, or other campus partners.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY - Develop innovative programs to ensure undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Letters are provided the best available resources to advance their career development. This includes workshops, guest speakers, networking events, career fair preparation, and more, specifically tailored to students in the College.
SUPPORT OF CENTRALIZED EFFORTS - Participate in regular career advising meetings and large departmental events and initiatives. Cover drop-in and exploding offer appointments as assigned. Participate in departmental programming (career fairs, etc.). Perform other duties as assigned by the Director to ensure the success of the Center for Career Development, the University, students, and other stakeholders. Serve as a member of the Division of Student Affairs and regularly collaborates with other areas within Student Affairs (Campus Ministry, Career and Professional Development, Residential Life, Sister Thea Bowman Center, Student Development, and Student Health and Wellness), student clubs and organizations, and other University units to enhance the department's work building connections and relationships with students.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
- 3-4 years of professional experience, preferably in higher education, career services, student development, advising, or a related field.
- Knowledge of higher education career services, career development principles, undergraduate career pathways, and the process of pursuing advanced degrees.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective advising, coaching, and guidance to college students as they explore career opportunities and professional goals. Experience with career advising is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information in engaging and compelling ways to diverse audiences, both in-person and virtually.
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to establish trust and collaborate effectively with students, colleagues, and campus partners across multiple departments.
- Ability to think strategically and conceptually while managing projects, balancing competing priorities, and meeting deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to quickly learn and effectively utilize technology and career-related platforms.
- Commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and contributing to a positive and inclusive team environment.
- Proactive approach to engaging students, building relationships, and developing a portfolio of students through outreach and intentional connection.
