Job description

Position Overview
The Field Engineer is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and execution of construction projects, including grading, utilities, paving, and concrete work. This role ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget while maintaining compliance with all regulatory and company standards.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Perform daily equipment, walk around and job site inspections to identify and correct any unsafe conditions and keep equipment properly maintained.
  • Troubleshoot and problem solve situations/problems (material quality, equipment operation/repair, etc.). Monitor and discuss production problems with co-workers and managers/supervisors.
  • Reports to Superintendent or Project Manager daily, especially when there are occurrences that can affect the successful completion of a project.
  • Maintains and works with Superintendent on projects schedules to ensure that all materials have been ordered and will be delivered on time; all equipment, Knife River personnel and subcontractors have been scheduled.
  • Ability to complete and prioritize multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Ensure that crews are meeting project budgets daily.
  • Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR regulation compliance.
  • Promote a safety-first culture, actively identify hazards, enforce compliance, and work to ensure all team members go home safely each day.
  • Work with crews, inspectors, and subcontractors to complete projects.
  • Communicate paving crew needs with dispatch - Calculate number of trucks required to haul aggregate and/or hot mix asphalt according to capacity of vehicles, traffic conditions, distance from work site and productivity of drivers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • College degree in CEM or related field required
  • Strong knowledge of construction processes and field operations
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and construction-related software is a plus
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical documents
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor environment
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
