Are you passionate about water safety, having fun, and helping others build lifelong skills? Join the Alexandria Area YMCA Swim Instructor team and be part of something meaningful! Weโ€™re looking for energetic, reliable individuals who are excited to create a safe, welcoming, and positive aquatics experience for all ages and skill levels.


Position Schedule

Flexible scheduling available based on lesson programming needs

Current lesson offerings may include:

  • Morning classes
  • Evening classes
  • Additional hours available through private lessons and aquatics programming

What You'll Do

  • Lead swim lessons following YMCA guidelines with engaging, prepared lesson plans
  • Build genuine connections with students and families to create a supportive environment
  • Promote water safety and encourage participant growth and confidence
  • Provide information about aquatics programs and YMCA offerings
  • Maintain accurate records including attendance and progress reports
  • Attend required staff meetings and trainings
  • Uphold YMCA policies and ensure safety procedures are followed at all times

Pay

Starting at $14.50/hour (up to $17/hour depending on experience)

Requirements:
  • Must be at least 15 years old
  • WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certification preferred, but not required
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications (or ability to obtain)
  • Ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to instruct and observe proper stroke techniques
  • Ability to lift equipment and assist children as needed
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for extended periods
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations
