What is an archives internship?

Archives internships are temporary positions, often held by students or recent graduates, that provide hands-on experience working in archival settings such as libraries, museums, government agencies, or historical societies. Interns typically assist with organizing, preserving, and cataloging historical documents, photographs, and other materials. These internships help individuals gain practical skills in archival management, research, and digital preservation, and are valuable for those considering a career in archives or related fields.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during an archives internship?

As an archives intern, you can expect to assist with processing, organizing, and preserving historical documents or digital records. Typical tasks include cataloging collections, creating inventories, digitizing materials, and helping researchers access archival resources. You may also participate in exhibitions or outreach projects, gaining hands-on experience with archival management systems and preservation best practices. This role often involves working closely with archivists and other interns, providing a collaborative environment to learn about both day-to-day operations and the broader mission of the institution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an archives intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Archives Intern, you typically need coursework or a background in history, library science, or archival studies, along with strong organizational skills. Familiarity with archival management systems, digitization tools, and metadata standards is often required.
