An Archive Intern is typically a student or early-career individual gaining hands-on experience, while an Archivist is a trained professional responsible for managing and preserving archival collections.

What is an archive intern?

Archive Interns are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who work temporarily within archival institutions such as libraries, museums, or corporate archives. Their main responsibilities may include organizing, cataloging, and preserving historical documents, photographs, and other records. Archive Interns assist professional archivists in maintaining collections, digitizing materials, and supporting research requests. This role provides hands-on experience in archival practices, helping interns develop valuable skills for a career in library science, history, or records management.

What does an archive intern do?

As an Archive Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as cataloguing, digitizing historical documents, assisting with preservation efforts, and supporting research requests. Interns often help maintain organizational systems and may contribute to creating finding aids or metadata for collections. The role typically involves collaborating with archivists and sometimes other departments, offering valuable exposure to both independent and team-based archival work. This hands-on experience is an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills and gain insight into the daily operations of an archive.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an archive intern?

To thrive as an Archive Intern, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a background in library science, history, or a related field. Familiarity with archival management software, digital cataloging systems, and digitization tools is often required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities set standout candidates apart. These skills ensure accurate preservation, efficient retrieval, and effective management of valuable archival materials.
