Position Summary
Skyhook Stairs amp; Rails is looking for an experienced Metal Shop Manager to lead our fabrication shop in Poway. We build custom stairs, railings, structural steel, and architectural metal projects for commercial and high-end residential construction throughout Southern California.
Weโ€™re looking for someone with strong shop leadership experience who understands custom metal fabrication, can keep production moving, maintain quality, and lead by example on the shop floor.
This is a hands-on leadership role managing welders, fabricators, fitters, equipment, production schedules, and shop workflow in a fast-paced custom fabrication environment.
Skyhook is an LADBS Certified Fabricator, so experience with structural steel procedures, inspections, welding standards, and quality documentation is highly valued.
Responsibilities
Shop Operations
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the fabrication shop
  • Supervise shop personnel of 3 to 4 fabricators
  • Schedule and prioritize shop production
  • Keep projects moving on schedule and within production goals
  • Maintain an organized, productive, and safety-focused shop
Fabrication amp; Production
  • Oversee fabrication of:
    • Custom stair systems
    • Railings
    • Structural steel
    • Miscellaneous metals
    • Architectural metal features
  • Review shop drawings before fabrication starts
  • Troubleshoot fabrication and fit-up issues
  • Coordinate with project managers and field installers
Quality amp; Certification
  • Maintain high standards for fit, finish, weld quality, and craftsmanship
  • Ensure fabrication meets drawings, specs, and shop standards
  • Help maintain LADBS certified shop requirements
  • Oversee welding procedures, inspections, and fabrication documentation
Equipment amp; Safety
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of shop equipment and machinery
  • Enforce OSHA and company safety standards
  • Identify ways to improve workflow and productivity
Qualifications
Required
  • 5+ years managing or leading a metal fabrication shop
  • Strong background in structural steel and architectural metals
  • Experience reading shop drawings and structural plans
  • Experience managing crews and production schedules
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication methods and welding procedures
  • Experience with commercial construction projects
Preferred
  • Custom stair fabrication experience
  • Experience in an LADBS Certified shop or similar structural steel environment
  • AWS welding certifications
  • Experience with stainless steel and aluminum fabrication
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
Technical Experience
  • MIG, TIG, FCAW, and SMAW welding processes
  • Structural steel fabrication and assembly
  • Architectural rail systems and miscellaneous metals
  • Rigging and shop equipment operation
  • Fabrication sequencing and field fit coordination
Compensation amp; Benefits
  • Hourly, non-exempt position
  • Competitive pay based on experience (large range for posted rate due to flexibility in experience level)
  • Typical work week is 4x10 schedule with exceptions based on work load for overtime opportunities
  • Overtime paid in accordance with California law, including daily and weekly overtime
  • Eligible for company benefits, including health, dental, and vision coverage, and a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan
  • All benefits are available following the completion of a 90-day introductory period
  • Paid holidays for company-observed holidays and applicable paid sick leave in accordance with California law
