Is AI replacing architects?

AI is not replacing architects but is increasingly used as a tool to assist in tasks such as design analysis, visualization, and project management. Architects still require creative thinking, technical skills, and professional licensure, which AI cannot replicate. The role of an architect involves complex decision-making and client interaction that AI cannot fully automate.

How much do learning architects make?

Learning architects, also known as instructional designers or learning experience designers, typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with specialized skills in e-learning tools and curriculum development can earn higher salaries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architect In Training, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect In Training, you need a solid background in architectural design, drafting, and building codes, generally supported by a professional degree in architecture. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as progress toward completing the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and convey design concepts clearly. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to projects, meeting client needs, and progressing toward architectural licensure.

What is an architect in training called?

An architect in training is typically called an intern architect or architectural intern. This stage involves gaining practical experience under supervision while working toward licensure, which requires passing the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

How much does a trainee architect earn?

A trainee architect typically earns between $30,000 and $50,000 annually, depending on location, education, and experience. Salaries often increase as they gain licensure and develop skills in design software and project management.

What are some common challenges faced by an Architect In Training and how can they be overcome?

As an Architect In Training, you'll often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple project deadlines, adapting to evolving client requirements, and mastering various design and drafting software. Additionally, transitioning academic knowledge into practical solutions can require guidance and patience. Overcoming these hurdles often involves proactive communication with senior architects, seeking regular feedback, and dedicating time to developing both technical and soft skills within a collaborative team environment.

What are Architect In Training positions?

An Architect In Training (AIT) is an entry-level professional who has completed a degree in architecture and is working toward becoming a licensed architect. AITs typically work under the supervision of a licensed architect, gaining practical experience required for licensure. They assist with design, drafting, project management, and other architectural tasks while logging the experience hours needed for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). This role is a crucial step in the progression from architectural education to full professional licensure.

What is the difference between Architect In Training vs Architectural Designer?

AspectArchitect In TrainingArchitectural Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a professional degree in architecture and is working towards licensureUsually holds a degree in architecture or related field, but not necessarily pursuing licensure
Work EnvironmentWorks under supervision in architecture firms, assisting with design and documentationWorks on design development, drafting, and project presentations, often in similar settings
Industry UsageCommonly used during the licensure process, indicating a candidate in trainingUsed for professionals involved in design work but not yet licensed

The main difference is that an Architect In Training is actively working towards licensure and typically works under supervision, while an Architectural Designer may have a similar educational background but is not necessarily pursuing licensure at that moment. Both roles involve design and drafting, but the Architect In Training is on the path to becoming a licensed architect.

Job description

Description

Let's do great things-Together

At Shive-Hattery, we believe great design starts with great people. We're a full-service architecture and engineering firm with a legacy of collaboration, innovation, and putting people first-our clients and each other. If you're looking for a place where your ideas matter and your growth is supported, you'll feel at home here.

Who We Are

Shive-Hattery is a privately held architecture and engineering consulting firm with design offices across the United States.

Here, you'll work alongside multidisciplinary teams delivering integrated design solutions for clients across industries. You'll contribute to meaningful projects guided by our principle to design what matters and make our world a better place.

You're looking to build something great. So are we.

Shive-Hattery is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected status.

This position is primarily performed in an office or hybrid environment and may require travel to project sites, other Shive-Hattery office locations or to meet with clients. A full clean drivers license is required. The role involves sitting, standing, and working at a computer for extended periods. May also require lifting light to medium weight objects of up to 50 lbs., the wearing of PPE and navigating active construction sites. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this role.ย

Why This Role Matters

Shive-Hattery's Food + Pharmaceutical Market has an exciting opportunity for a Licensed Architect with 10+ years of experience in client contact and development, design, and leadership of architectural projects with a specific knowledge of pharmaceutical and science + technology project types and clients. This is a fantastic career-growth opportunity for a talented individual who is prepared to take on next-level leadership challenges, contribute on an elevated level in a collaborative team culture, and expand their expertise. Additionally, it is an opportunity to be instrumental in setting the direction of Shive-Hattery's Pharmaceutical design practice as it relates to laboratory and manufacturing opportunities.

Sarah Segelhorst, healthcare architect in Bettendorf, describes her experience after joining Shive-Hattery in 2021, below:ย

When I made the move to Shive-Hattery, I was already leading projects but didn't see a clear path for what was next. I was looking for more than just project responsibility-I wanted growth, leadership opportunities, and a future I could actively shape.

What I found here was exactly that. From the beginning, there was a clear path to leadership, but not a one-size-fits-all version of it. Whether your interests lean toward people leadership, technical expertise, thought leadership, mentorship, or business development, there is space to grow in a way that aligns with your strengths.

he level of trust and autonomy has been a defining part of my experience. There is an entrepreneurial spirit that encourages you to take ownership, pursue ideas, and build something meaningful within the firm. That environment has allowed me to step into leading people, become a shareholder, and continue expanding how I contribute.

Equally important, working alongside integrated engineering teams has made me a better architect. The collaboration is real, and it shows up in the quality of the work and the experience of delivering it.

For someone in that 5-10 year range who is ready for more, this is a place where you can grow quickly and intentionally. The opportunities are here-you just have to be ready to take them.

What you'll do

As an architect in the Food + Pharmaceutical Market, you will be collaborating with multi-disciplined teams within the Industrial Business Unit and across the entire Shive-Hattery ecosystem on local, regional, and national projects. We are a full-service design firm offering interior design, architecture, engineering, and landscape architecture. In this role, you will lead architectural design and project management efforts for projects serving primarily industrial, healthcare, and higher education clients:

  • Lead the architectural design and project management with design discussions, idea generation, collaboration, and design work in drawing, modeling and 3D image formats.
  • Direct non-licensed and other professionals assigned to design, produce, and coordinate the design process, laboratory and manufacturing planning, and technical documents.
  • Attend project and client meetings with design professionals for both business development opportunities and projects under contract.
  • Develop technical design solutions.
  • Develop and identify training opportunities to improve and increase the companies capacity to work in this practice area.ย
  • Assist ย ย ย ย ย with growth strategy and client capture efforts to increase Shive-Hattery's market share within the pharmaceutical and science + technology practices.ย
  • Assist in design presentation development.
  • Assist with personnel needs identification including internal networking to identify others within Shive-Hattery who can be drawn upon to support project work as opportunities increase.

Our Commitment to You

Great work happens when you feel secure in your future, confident in your support, and trusted to grow.

That's why our benefits support your health, financial stability, and life beyond work - including medical, dental and vision coverage, paid time off and holidays, 401(k) retirement savings, disability protection, wellness incentives, and flexibility.
