What is an apprentice?

An apprentice is a person who is learning a trade or skill through a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Apprenticeships are structured programs that allow individuals to earn while they learn, typically under the supervision of experienced professionals. These programs are common in skilled trades like construction, electrical work, and plumbing, but are also found in fields such as healthcare and information technology. Apprenticeships usually last from one to four years, after which the apprentice becomes a fully qualified worker in their chosen field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apprentice, you need a basic educational background, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in the specific trade or industry. Familiarity with basic tools, safety protocols, and sometimes entry-level certifications or coursework are typically required. Strong communication, reliability, and a positive attitude help apprentices stand out in the workplace. These skills and qualities are essential for learning effectively, ensuring safety, and building a solid foundation for career advancement.

What kinds of support or mentorship can an apprentice expect during their training period?

As an apprentice, you will typically be paired with an experienced mentor or supervisor who provides hands-on guidance, answers questions, and helps you develop essential skills in your chosen trade or field. Many apprenticeship programs also include regular check-ins, progress reviews, and classroom-based learning to supplement on-the-job experience. This structured support system is designed to help apprentices gradually take on more responsibility, build confidence, and address challenges as they arise, ensuring a smooth transition into a full-time professional role.

Both roles are essential in trades like construction and electrical work, with the Journeyman representing a higher level of proficiency.

What does an apprentice job mean?

An apprentice job is a position that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction, allowing individuals to learn a trade or skill while working. Apprentices typically work under the supervision of experienced workers and may earn a wage while gaining practical experience and industry certifications.

What work does an apprentice do?

An apprentice performs entry-level tasks related to their chosen trade or profession, such as assisting experienced workers, learning technical skills, and gaining hands-on experience. They often work under supervision, follow safety protocols, and may attend training or classes as part of their program.

Job description

👋 I’m Tommy, and I’m the CEO of A1 Garage Door. I’m glad you’re here.

I started the company in 2007, and we have since grown to cover almost half the United States. Our vision is to become America’s largest and most trusted garage door company.

We are looking for high performers to join us. The Installer job is physically demanding. Stamina and enthusiasm are required!

You don’t need to have experience with garage doors. Our team will train you on everything you need to know (including the customer experience, the key to our success), so you can thrive in your very own market.

You Should Apply If:

  • 🎓You love to learn as much as you love to win

  • 🗣️You’re a master of organization. You work methodically and cleanly

  • 💡You like to help people and you take pride from a job well done

  • ‍⚙️Your peers describe you as handy, reliable, and trustworthy

  • ‍‍⚡You move fast, you’re always busy, and no task is too small or too big

  • ‍📈 You’re self-motivated and enjoy working autonomously

  • 🛠️ You should DEFINITELY apply if you have worked in similar industries, performing installation or assembly. (Windows & doors, flooring, carpentry, kitchen installation, furniture/fixtures/bike assembly etc.)

You Shouldn’t Apply If:

  • You prefer working where there are no customers to talk to

  • You think that manual labor is for other people

  • You’re not weather resistant (hot/cold depending on geography)

  • You’re not likely to follow what you were taught in class and apply it with gusto

The Job:

  • Install new garage doors for residential customers

  • Remove existing door and mechanical parts

  • Replace worn or broken door parts using tools

  • Assemble mechanical parts

  • Install springs, sections, slats, and hardware

  • Run wiring to connect equipment

  • Lubricate and test mechanical parts for proper functioning

  • Educate customers on upgraded parts and services and ensure satisfaction

  • Document activities related to installations

Basic Requirements:

  • 21 years old and valid driver’s license (3+ years driving record)

  • Able to bend, climb, kneel and stand for long periods

  • Physically able to lift 75lbs, lift garage door panels above head

  • Able to stand on ladder

  • Basic knowledge of hand tools (Power drill, hammer, saw  etc.)

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test (not including THC) and criminal background check

  • Knowledge of basic software such as navigation apps, Google etc. as well as tablet and computer use

  • GED or HS diploma not required, however reading skills as well as basic math skills (measurements, payments) are required

  • Professional & approachable appearance

  • Employment requires current eligibility to legally work in the United States

The Journey of an Installer:

  • Our apprenticeship is a 4 week training program at the A1 Training Academy in Phoenix, AZ.

  • A1 covers flights and accommodations for the duration of your training in Phoenix. (All apprenticeship/training weeks are paid at an  hourly rate of $20/hour. You will typically work 45-50 hours a week while an apprentice, and qualify for overtime for hours over 40 in a week, so should average $1,000 a week or more.)

  • Once you complete training, you will receive a $1,000 bonus, and graduate to a junior installer. You will perform your duties in and around your market. Boom!

Pay, benefits, other cool stuff:

  • Get your very own A1 wrapped van or truck with a gas card.

  • Tools provided!

  • Steady job flow to keep you busy

  • Medical, dental, vision, 401K

  • Starting pay $36.75/hour (Piece Rate) + commission on additional sales/services

  • Weekly pay

  • $1,000 bonus at completion of Training Academy in Phoenix (in addition to weekly pay)

Interview Process:

Our interview process is not long, but it’s thorough. We want to make sure that each person who joins the team is the right fit for A1. And that we are the right fit for you!

  1. After we review your application, you will be contacted for an interview with a recruiter if we want to know more. Plan on up to 45 minutes.
