Job description

UPMC Hamot | Erie, PA
Full-Time | Third Shift

As the region's only Level II Trauma Center, UPMC Hamot operates around the clock, and our Maintenance team plays a vital role in supporting patient care by ensuring hospital systems, equipment, and facilities remain safe, functional, and reliable. This full-time position requires weekend availability, along with the ability to work independently during overnight hours while responding to a variety of maintenance and facility needs.

Hired candidates will be placed in the appropriate level of the career ladder based on their experience, education, and leader discretion. We will consider either a candidate at the General Maintenance 2 level, or Journeyman 1 level.


General Maintenance 2 Responsibilities:

  • Perform general maintenance work and tasks as directed with minimal supervision. Perform specific preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment. Exhibit a basic knowledge of electricity, plumbing, carpentry/hardware, mechanical equipment and facilities systems. Maintain a clean and safe work area, equipment rooms and shop areas. Maintain all written logs pertaining to shift responsibilities, i.e., med gas, equipment room rounds, etc. Maintain water chemistry and testing procedures on equipment and building systems. Operate and maintain a variety of building's direct digital control (DDC) systems. Order materials as needed. Perform all work following infection control procedures. Perform minor carpentry and painting work.
  • Record work orders and submit hours to supervisor on a daily basis. Minor repairs and maintaining of plumbing fixtures, piping systems, plumbing leaks (soldering), defective pipes and clogged drains. Performs general cleaning duties on equipment and in mechanical support areas. Performs required maintenance, repair and inspection of beds. Ability to perform snow removal activities and work in adverse weather conditions.*Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. *Performs other duties as assigned.

Journeyman 1 Responsibilities:

  • Perform general maintenance work and tasks as directed with minimal supervision.

  • Inspect electrical distribution systems, locate short circuits, loose connectors, worn motor brushes, etc.; inspect fire alarm system and provide first response to all fire alarms.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work area, equipment rooms and shop areas.

  • Maintain all written logs pertaining to shift responsibilities, i.e., med gas, equipment room rounds, etc.

  • Maintain water chemistry and testing procedures on equipment and building systems.

  • Operate and maintain a variety of building's direct digital control (DDC) systems.

  • Order materials as needed.

  • Perform all work following infection control procedures.

  • Perform minor carpentry and painting work.

  • Record work orders and submit hours to supervisor on a daily basis.

  • Minor repairs and maintaining of plumbing fixtures, piping systems, plumbing leaks (soldering), defective pipes and clogged drains.

  • Safely and efficiently operate and maintain all mechanical systems, i.e., steam pressure heating systems, water systems, ventilation systems, refrigeration equipment, etc.; round mechanical equipment and machine rooms in all buildings as assigned.

  • Performs required maintenance, repair and inspection of beds.

  • Ability to perform snow removal activities and work in adverse weather conditions.

General Maintenance 2 Requirements: Completion of a high school diploma/GED is required. A total of 2 years of general maintenance-related work experience is required. Healthcare experience is preferred. Completion of a High School Vocational program or Trade School is preferred. Military experience considered.

Pay range: $21.27 - $34.08
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Journeyman 1 Requirements: Completion of an Associate's Degree, a Two-year Mechanical or related Trade School program or an Apprenticeship in a Trade. Also 4 years of general maintenance work experience working in a healthcare or commercial environment is required. Military experience considered.

Completion of a high school diploma/GED and a Total of 8 years of general maintenance work experience working in a healthcare or commercial environment is required. Military experience considered.

Pay range: $25.97 - $45.04

  • Certifications in one or more specific trade is preferred - HVACR, Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry.
