Job Description
We are seeking a self-driven Structural Engineer 1 who excels in collaborative environments and can effectively manage engineering projects of varying size and complexity. In this role, you will support one of our key engineering value streams-Facilities at Newport News Shipbuilding. Placement will be determined based on how your skills align with organizational needs.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, initiative, and a team-oriented mindset. In this position, you will help coordinate a variety of engineering projects that support critical facility improvements across the shipyard.
Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Develops and refines structural engineering specifications for product design and operation, addressing metallic, non-metallic, and composite materials across structural, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, power plant, armament, and HVAC systems, as well as equipment and maintenance designs.
  • Conducts analyses focused on damage tolerance, durability, producibility, cost, safety, design allowables, and structural modeling.
  • Areas of specialization may include dynamics and loads, stability, stress and fatigue, and thermal analysis.
  • Utilizes and validates 3D and digital modeling to support and communicate design intent throughout production.
  • Proficient with engineering and analytical tools such as CATIA, IDEAS, Siemens PLM Software NX, ProEngineer, and various specialized analysis applications.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 0 years experience with Bachelors in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 years relevant experience. Willing to work within an industrial shipyard environment, on-site.
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain DOD Security Clearance.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in utility plumbing.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned utility systems.
  • Must have experience creating or overseeing the development of technical documentation governing system design, configuration, and operation.
  • Must have experience participating in the design and implementation phases of system-related projects.

Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ASME and/or ASCE codes and standards is a plus.
  • Any previous experience in public utilities sector
  • Apprentice schooling

Physical Requirements
May require working in an office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
