How much do apprentice salary jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for apprentice salary in the United States is $22.02, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an apprentice salary?

An apprentice salary is the wage paid to individuals who are undergoing training in a specific trade or profession through an apprenticeship program. Apprentice salaries are typically lower than those of fully qualified workers because apprentices are still learning on the job under the supervision of experienced professionals. The exact amount varies depending on the industry, location, and year of apprenticeship, but wages often increase as the apprentice gains more experience and skills. In some regions, there are minimum wage requirements for apprentices to ensure fair compensation during their training period.

What are some common challenges faced by apprentices during their training period?

Apprentices often encounter the challenge of balancing on-the-job responsibilities with classroom learning, as they are expected to develop practical skills while mastering theoretical concepts. Another common hurdle is adapting to the workplace culture and expectations, which can be especially demanding for those new to the industry. Time management and effective communication with supervisors and colleagues are key to overcoming these challenges and making the most of the apprenticeship experience.

What is the difference between Apprentice Salary vs Journeyman Salary?

AspectApprentice SalaryJourneyman Salary
Required CredentialsBasic training, apprenticeship programCompleted apprenticeship, certification
Work EnvironmentOn-the-job training, supervisedIndependent work, skilled tasks
Employer & Industry UsageEntry-level, training phaseSkilled worker, experienced professional

Apprentice salaries are typically lower as they are in training, earning while learning basic skills. Once they complete their apprenticeship and become journeymen, their salary increases significantly due to their proven skills and experience. The transition from apprentice to journeyman reflects a move from learning to skilled work, impacting salary levels accordingly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apprentice, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, a willingness to learn, and a foundational understanding of the industry you are entering. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, safety protocols, and sometimes basic certifications (like OSHA for trades) are often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and a proactive attitude help apprentices stand out and adapt quickly. These skills and qualities are essential for developing competence, ensuring safety, and making the most of on-the-job training opportunities.
