An Apprentice Power Plant Operator is an entry-level role where individuals learn to operate and maintain power generation equipment under the supervision of experienced operators. They monitor gauges, adjust controls, perform routine maintenance, and ensure the plant runs efficiently and safely. Apprentices receive hands-on training and may also study technical materials to understand power generation principles. Over time, they gain the skills and experience needed to become fully qualified power plant operators.
A typical day for an Apprentice Power Plant Operator involves shadowing experienced operators, monitoring equipment and control systems, and assisting with routine maintenance tasks. You’ll be responsible for logging data, checking gauges, responding to alarms, and learning safety and emergency procedures. Apprentices work closely with a team to solve operational issues and gain hands-on experience, progressively taking on more responsibility as skills develop. This hands-on training prepares you for advancement to fully qualified operator roles within the power generation industry.
To thrive as an Apprentice Power Plant Operator, you need a basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, strong math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with tools such as control panels, SCADA systems, and safety protocols is commonly expected, and enrollment in or completion of technical training programs is advantageous. Perform safe and efficient equipment operations for loading, moving, shipping and ticketing ash products at the Power Plant in Sutherland. $1200 hiring bonus.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesAbiding by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.
Operating rubber tire front end loader, motor grader and semi-truck to haul ash inside the plant area to the OPPD landfill or storage building.
Loading ash into market trucks &/or rail cars.
Ensuring appropriate tickets are written for orders according to requirements.
Working with appropriate personnel to identify and plan daily operations.
Keeping ash product within the designated landfill areas according to standards established within the department.
Maintaining the shop & equipment according to safety standards.
Cleaning shop, office, restroom, scale rooms and equipment on a regular basis.
Checking brakes, tires, springs, engine oil, etc. on a daily basis. Greasing, changing oil, changing tires, and performing other maintenance as required.
Other duties may be assigned.
Position Requirements and EducationHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.

Working ConditionsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands & fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50-75 pounds to shoulder height.
Must be able to climb on and off, in and out of the loader, motor grader and truck as often as required to fill orders for delivery and/or landfill of coal combustion products.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Requires a Background Check and a pre-employment physical with drug screen and a criminal background check.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, may be extreme hot or cold.
Must be able to climb to a height of 100 feet. Must also deal with precarious places and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Day hours are generally 6 am to 6 pm, averaging 40 to 50 hours a week.
Hours may vary based on daily loading requirements.
Occasional Saturday and Sunday work may be required to load market trucks.
This is a tobacco free campus.
Condition of Employment
Candidate is required to meet the above qualifications, task frequency and PPE requirements. Approval of pre-employment reference & background checks, and post offer drug/alcohol testing with back screens (if required) are required as conditions of employment.
