Job description

Description The Water Recovery Plant is looking for a Building & Equipment Plant Mechanic with extensive relevant experience to coordinate and perform the repair and maintenance of heavy industrial machinery, preferably water treatment and pumping equipment. Duties include maintaining and ensuring that the equipment is efficiently operating for 24/7 plant operations. Normal working hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM with the expectation of rotating call duty during the nights, holidays and weekends with additional compensation for call duty.

This position is part of a progression plan - Plant Mechanic Apprentice , Plant Mechanic, Plant Mastercraft Mechanic. The position advertised is for the Plant Mechanic Apprentice, however, compensation will be based on qualifications and experience. Applicants who have the relevant qualifications and experience will be considered for the Plant Mechanic and the Plant Mastercraft Mechanic.

Essential Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned. Inspects equipment and machinery and determines needed maintenance; Replaces and performs general maintenance on packing, bearings, seals, sleeves and worn parts on pumps, motors, valves, air compressors, chemical feeders, etc.; Performs general plumbing repair and plumbing installation; Repairs small engines; Adjusts shaft alignments and couplings; Installs and replaces water treatment equipment, piping and high pressure lines; Welds and fabricates repair parts; Performs preventive maintenance on a variety of equipment.; Maintains plant and pumping station buildings and grounds; Makes minor electrical repairs; Assists contractors in the installation of new equipment and machinery; Maintains records concerning work and purchases; Maintains inventory of spare parts and fittings; Rotates on-call coverage with other employees to respond to emergencies after hours and on weekends; Works around heights, confined spaces and hazardous chemicals

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned. When unusual situations occur and /or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Education and Experience Required QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and considerable mechanical maintenance experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy industrial machinery, preferably water or wastewater treatment and pumping equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional Requirements Possession of valid driver's license issued by Commonwealth of Virginia with acceptable driving record based on City criteria; may be required to obtain additional licenses as needed; Ability to obtain forklift certification within 6 month of employment; Ownership or approved access to a telephone; Relevant background checks must be completed and approved; Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
