Job Description
The Underground Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of mining equipment and light vehicles to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. This role involves both underground and surface work on mobile and fixed equipment, requiring strong technical expertise, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work in challenging conditions.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PMs), inspections, and repairs on underground and surface mining equipment, including:
    • Sandvik LHDs, drills, and haul trucks
    • Normet utility and support equipment
    • Caterpillar and Komatsu loaders, and auxiliary equipment
    • Light vehicles and support units.

  • Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical systems to diagnose faults and implement effective solutions.
  • Conduct field repairs in underground workings as required, minimizing downtime and ensuring equipment is safely returned to service.
  • Follow OEM manuals, technical prints, and site-specific maintenance procedures.
  • Complete accurate work orders, PM checklists, and equipment service records.
  • Always maintain safe work practices, including proper lockout/tagout, JHA completion, and compliance with mine site safety policies.
  • Collaborate with operations, supervisors, and other maintenance personnel to prioritize repairs and support production needs.
  • Provide feedback on equipment condition, recurring issues, and recommend improvements to reliability and performance.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and assist in training apprentices or junior mechanics.

Qualifications
  • Previous experience in underground mining maintenance is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on knowledge of Sandvik, Normet, Caterpillar, and Komatsu mining equipment.
  • Familiarity with underground support vehicles and light-duty fleet.
  • Ability to read OEM manuals, hydraulic/electrical schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Strong diagnostic skills with mechanical, hydraulic, can bus and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency with laptops and diagnostic software for OEM equipment.

Skills & Competencies
  • Strong commitment to safety and compliance with mining regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment under demanding conditions.
  • Effective communication skills to relay technical information and equipment status.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Physically fit and able to work in confined underground spaces.
  • Schedule is a 7 on and 7 off schedule, DS/NS and overtime as needed.

Working Conditions
  • Work performed both underground in a mining environment and on surface in workshops or yard facilities.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, diesel emissions, and varying temperatures.
  • Use of PPE always required (hard hat, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, gloves, etc.).

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with complex problems, including both definition of the problem and generation and evaluation of solutions.
    • Excellent planning and organizational skills, including goal setting, group performance monitoring and the ability to modify priorities where necessary to achieve these goals.
    • The ability to decide from a range of competing options where the outcomes are not entirely predictable.
    • Effective written and oral communication skills, and the ability to convince others to co-operate and contribute.

Physical Requirements:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
  • Must be able to work shift work with 12-hour shifts.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the workday.
  • Work is in a surface mine plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hart hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and any other protective equipment as required.
