Job description

Experienced Traveling Manual Machinist - Hiring ASAP!

Job Title: Manual Machinist

Job Description

This role performs precision machining of turbine components, valves, and other equipment received for repair using a variety of manual machines. You will work from engineering drawings, weld and GD&T symbols, approved procedures, and OEM specifications to produce parts to exact tolerances and finishes. The position involves both shop and field machining work, including portable machining and on-site repairs, while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area.

Responsibilities

  • Perform precision machining operations such as turning, milling, grinding, boring, and fitting on turbine components, valves, and other equipment received for repair.
  • Set up and operate manual machines, including lathes, mills, grinders, and boring mills, selecting appropriate work-holding, fixturing, tooling, speeds, and feeds for each job.
  • Plan and perform efficient and safe machine setups, including work-holding, fixturing, tooling, offsets, speeds, and feeds.
  • Work from blueprints, single-part drawings, procedure drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T symbols to machine parts to required tolerances and surface finishes.
  • Interpret and follow OEM specifications and approved procedures to ensure all parts meet dimensional and quality requirements.
  • Use precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and bore gauges to verify dimensions and confirm work meets specifications.
  • Perform machining work in the shop and on field assignments, including portable machining and on-site repairs when required.
  • Maintain tools, gauges, and machines by keeping them clean, checked, and properly stored, and report any damage or issues promptly.
  • Monitor and maintain consumables, ensuring necessary supplies and tooling are available to support ongoing work.
  • Follow all safety rules, including proper use of PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe lifting practices.
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards throughout the shift, maintaining high standards of housekeeping.
  • Support the crew by collaborating on jobs and assisting with complex setups and measurements as needed.
  • Help coach and mentor apprentice machinists by sharing machining techniques, demonstrating proper methods, and verifying their work as directed by leadership.

Essential Skills

  • Proven ability to perform precision machining operations including turning, milling, grinding, boring, and fitting on a variety of components.
  • Hands-on experience setting up and operating manual machines such as lathes, mills, grinders, boring mills, and turning lathes.
  • Ability to plan and execute machine setups, including selection and installation of work-holding, fixturing, tooling, and setting offsets, speeds, and feeds.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, single-part drawings, and procedure drawings.
  • Ability to interpret weld symbols and GD&T symbols and apply them accurately during machining.
  • Experience machining exotic metals and other challenging materials using manual machines.
  • Strong measurement and quality skills, including the use of micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and bore gauges to verify dimensions.
  • Capability to machine parts to tight tolerances and specified finishes in accordance with OEM requirements.
  • Knowledge of safe machine operation, including proper use of PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, and safe lifting practices.
  • Ability to support both shop-based machining and field work, including portable machining and on-site repairs.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and adherence to procedures and specifications.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with turbine components, valves, and repair work is highly beneficial.
  • Work experience in mill machining and the use of turning tools and grinding machines.
  • Familiarity with fitting and assembly practices related to machined components.
  • Experience maintaining and caring for tools, gauges, and manual machines, including routine checks and basic troubleshooting.
  • Ability to coach or mentor apprentice machinists by sharing knowledge and verifying work.
  • Comfort working from OEM and internal procedures and adapting to different job requirements in both shop and field environments.

Why Work Here?

You will join a hands-on, craft-focused environment where precision machining skills are valued and continuously developed. The role offers exposure to a wide variety of challenging repair work, both in the shop and in the field, providing strong opportunities to broaden your technical experience. You will work alongside experienced tradespeople who share knowledge, support one another, and encourage mentoring of apprentices, fostering a collaborative and learning-oriented culture. The setting rewards attention to detail, safety, and craftsmanship, giving you the satisfaction of seeing high-quality work leave the shop and perform reliably in critical applications.

Work Environment

The role is based primarily in an indoor shop environment that can become warm, loud, and dirty due to machining operations. You will work around manual lathes, mills, grinders, boring mills, and related equipment, as well as portable machining tools for field assignments. The work involves standing for extended periods, handling metal components, and working with cutting fluids and other shop materials. Safety practices are a core part of daily operations, including consistent use of PPE, adherence to machine guarding and lockout/tagout procedures, and maintaining a clean, organized work area throughout the shift.
