VOCATIONAL LECTURER - EARLY COLLEGE CONSTRUCTION

DAWSON TECHNICAL INSTITUTE

Dawson Technical Institute (DTI) of Kennedy-King College is an academic job training center for Construction Technology careers established in 1968. Named after U.S. Congressman William L. Dawson, DTI is recognized for providing top quality job training and construction industry career development. DTI provides students with intensive and comprehensive industry validated training in the construction trade and utility industries. DTI is committed to preparing students to compete in these industries by offering relevant competency-based instruction that leads to unionized apprenticeships and other relevant trade and utility worker opportunities.

Kennedy-King College is seeking a part-time Vocational Lecturer - Early College Construction. Reporting to the Dean of Dawson Technical Institute (DTI), the Vocational Lecturer - Early College Construction is preparing and delivering hands-on, industry-relevant instruction aligned with National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) standards and CCC curriculum.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Travel to one of our CPS or charter school Early College partner sites

  • Setting up engaging hands-on lessons, delivering high-quality instruction aligned to introductory trade curriculum, and supporting dual credit/dual-enrollment students.

  • Communicate daily with CPS teachers, counselors, and DTI leadership, monitor attendance and progress, and provide timely grading, feedback, and skill demonstrations

  • Teaching construction curriculum to motivated high-school students in modern, hands-on labs.

  • Helping design and shape the future of DTI's Early College Construction pathways.

  • Collaborating with CPS partners and seeing their lessons directly influence the career trajectory of young Chicago learners.

  • Being part of a team that is expanding NCCER, OSHA, and dual-enrollment offerings across the city

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Be a Journeyman in your trade.

  • Have 7 years of professional experience in construction trades (Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, or related field).

  • Ability to travel to various CPS and charter school partner sites during the school day.

  • Strong understanding of construction trades fundamentals: construction safety, hand and power tools, construction math, materials, and job-site readiness.

  • Experience teaching or training youth, preferably ages 15-18.

  • Ability to scaffold complex concepts for high-school learners while maintaining college-level rigor.

  • Excellent classroom management in nontraditional settings.

  • Strong communication skills, cultural competency, and ability to build rapport with diverse learners.

  • Ability to develop and deliver engaging, hands-on demonstrations and academic instruction (construction math, safety, tools, employability skills).

  • Professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, and strong organizational skills.

The salary for this position is $57.75/hr
