Position
We are seeking applications, on an ongoing basis, for
physics adjunct instructors and substitutes at Renton Technical College (RTC). The Dean of General Education reviews applications as needed to fill openings. Please see Terms of Employment for further compensation details. This position will remain open until filled.
RTC will begin offering calculus-based, engineering physics classes (PHYS&221 and PHYS&222) to support our Direct Transfer Agreement DTA-MRP in computer science. What do you need to know?
- We have a modest amount of equipment for PHYS&221 lab experiments and are eager to invest in additional resources.
- We prioritize the use of open educational resource (OER) textbooks, and where that is not possible, materials that cost less than $50.
- We pay for curriculum development when classes are new to our college.
- We are particularly interested in candidates who are available for in-person lab instruction on weekdays, weeknights, or Saturdays.

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions Include
- Create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Effectively teach calculus-based physics lecture and lab.
- Design inclusive instructional strategies, including classroom, small group and individualized instruction, to reach all students, and select and evaluate the materials needed to implement these strategies.
- Work effectively with students from academically, culturally and economically diverse backgrounds.
- Evaluate student progress towards attaining the learning outcomes, including thoughtfully designed individual assignments, projects, quizzes, and standardized tests.
- Maintain and submit student records, documentation, and program reports, including annual assessment reports on assigned general education student learning outcomes.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated leadership or participation in institutional programs with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.
- Master's degree in physics or other graduate degree with substantial credits in physics.
- Ability to design in-person and online learning experiences that are interactive and respectful of cultural differences.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals whose first language is not English.
- Ability to work effectively and engage with adult learners.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy.
- Speaker of a language in addition to English is preferred- preference for top spoken languages in the RTC service area (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, Chinese).
Terms of Employment
In the interest of providing a healthy, safe and secure educational and work environment, and in order to meet the requirements of federal legislation, it is the policy of Renton Technical College to maintain an alcohol and drug-free workplace for our employees and students.
This is an adjunct faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis. Lecture (theory) credits are compensated at $1,118 per credit, which includes scheduled class time and final exam days, in addition to a per credit stipend based on the high demand tier. All guided practice instructional credits for adjunct will be paid with an additional pay factor of 1.33. Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $1,683 per credit, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.
Degree Stipend:Master's or Doctorate degree stipends are paid on a prorated per credit rate.
The person hired is required to provide authorization for employment in the United States. Waiving Medical Coverage
If you have other medical insurance, you can choose to waive medical coverage for yourself or anyfamily member. If you have existing coverage through your spouse or domestic partner, please contact the plan directly to see how they will coordinatebenefits.
If waiving medical coverage, the employee will still be covered under the dental and vision insurance plan at no monthly premium cost.
Flexible Spending Arrangement (FSA& LPFSA) & Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP)
The FSA, LFA and DCAP plans are offered by the College and the State of Washington. FSA is a PEBB sponsored benefit program that allows you to use pre-tax money in a calendar year to pay for certain out-of-pocket medical expenses and/or Childcare expenses.
An FSA can save you 25 - 40% on your eligible expenses. Both plans are offered as payroll deductions.

Flexible Spending Arrangements can be between a minimum of $120 to maximum of $3,400. As a "use it or lose it" IRC governed plan, medical expense reimbursements can be requested for employees, spouse, or their IRS eligible dependents.

Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Arrangement can be between a minimum of $120 to maximum of $3,400. As a "use it or lose it" IRC governed plan, medical expense reimbursements can be requested for employee, spouse, or their IRS eligible dependents. Limited Purpose FSA is for employees enrolled in CDHP plans with HSA. Funds can only be used for dental and vision expenses only.
Dependent Care FSA (DCAP) allows you to save on child or elder care expenses. (e.g., babysitting, daycare, in-home care for an older dependent inept of self-care). Annual contribution is $7,500 for a Single person or Married couple filing a joint tax return. Contribution of $3,750 for each married participant filing separate tax returns.
Life-Insurance
Permanent employees, lawful spouse, qualified same-sex domestic partner and dependent children under 26 years of age are eligible to enroll in life Insurance. Coverage is effective first of the month following the date of employment for basic coverage; for optional coverage, amounts become effective the first of the month following approval date.
