Job description

Description The Apprentice Embalmer prepares remains for interment or cremation under the supervision of a Licensed Embalmer. They will perform embalming, dressing, casketing, cosmetics, and mortuary related duties. WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
  • Disinfect remains through external application of antiseptics and disinfectant fluids.
  • Embalm remains to assure proper disinfectant preservation and appearance. Use all proper embalming instruments and machinery.
  • Dress and apply cosmetics; place remains in casket using electric lift.
  • Meet with families for cosmetic interviews and adjustments when needed.
  • Wrap and prepare un-embalmed remains for cremation or other dispositions.
  • Prepare deceased for transportation as needed.
  • Inspect remains to be suitable for final disposition and TSA regulations.
  • Place remains in visitation room and set up room to comply with the family requests and religious traditions.
  • Conduct first calls.
  • Maintain all necessary paperwork to comply with regulatory laws and Forest Lawn standards to include first calls and identification of remains.
  • Assist with the disinterment of human remains as requested.
  • Stock and clean preparation room and refrigeration unit.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the mortuary building and restrooms when needed.
  • Maintain casket inventory and jewelry log book.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school in Mortuary Science or Embalming; or proof of current enrollment in school for an Associate's degree (A. A.) in Mortuary Science.
  • Ability to receive a mortuary science degree (within an agreed period with Forest Lawn) and passing the National Board Examination (sciences section) within a year from the time of start in position.
  • Ability to register as an apprentice embalmer.
  • Ability to lift up to 100lbs.
  • Current valid California Driver's License.
