1st Shift CNC Lathe Programmer -- (aerospace/defense manufacturing) -- San Jose, CA

Position Summary

The CNC Lathe Programmer is responsible for creating, optimizing, and troubleshooting CNC lathe programs to support precision machining operations. This role involves developing efficient machining processes, selecting tooling, and ensuring part quality meets customer and industry standards. The Senior Programmer collaborates with machinists, engineers, and quality teams to drive productivity, reduce cycle times, and continuously improve manufacturing efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Programming & Process Development- Develop, proof, and optimize CNC lathe programs for complex parts, including multi-axis and live tooling applications.

    • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T requirements to create accurate machining strategies.
    • Select cutting tools, speeds, feeds, and work holding methods to maximize efficiency and part quality.
    • Optimize programs for reduced cycle times, improved tool life, and consistent quality.
  • Collaboration & Support- Partner with setup technicians and machinists to ensure successful program implementation.

    • Provide technical guidance and training for operators and junior programmers.
    • Work closely with engineering and quality control to resolve machining and dimensional issues.
  • Quality & Compliance- Ensure all programs and processes comply with ISO, AS9100, and customer requirements.

    • Conduct first article inspections (FAI) support and revise programs as needed.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of programs, process sheets, and tool lists.
  • Continuous Improvement- Evaluate and recommend new tooling, software, and machining techniques.

    • Participate in Lean Manufacturing, cycle time reduction, and process improvement initiatives.
    • Troubleshoot machine, tooling, and program issues to minimize downtime.

Work Environment

  • Primarily shop-floor based with some office/computer work for programming.
  • Standard business hours with occasional overtime to support production needs.

**Qualifications:**

Preferred:

  • Experience in aerospace, medical device, or defense machining.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methods.
  • Familiarity with MRP/ERP systems for manufacturing process management.

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree or apprenticeship preferred
  • 7+ years of CNC lathe programming experience in a precision machining environment
  • Strong proficiency in G-code programming and CAM software (Mastercam, GibbsCAM, or equivalent).
  • Experience with multi-axis lathes and live tooling.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
