What you will accomplish as an Applications Engineer at TAPCO:

The Application Engineer is the primary technical resource for quoting nonstandard and complex systems given by sales and is responsible for actively driving and managing the quoting stages of the sales ETO process. Working in conjunction with the sales team and production as a key technical advisor and product advocate; the Application Engineer must be able to identify and provide reliable solutions for technical issues to assure complete customer satisfaction with the given product scope. The position is responsible for presenting information and new ideas to be implemented into new and existing products; build quotes from customer requests, perform some training both internally and externally on products and systems and will assist with the service group in some situations. Assigned to Engineering; the Application Engineer will work with various departments within TAPCO such as Sales, Production, Purchasing and Inventory to ensure that client specifications are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain expert level of product knowledge and application.
  • Prepares cost estimates by studying blueprints, plans and related customer documents; consulting with engineers and customers, sales and production to determine those components required to meet a client's specification.
  • Responds to and writes functional and technical elements of project submittal package and outlines compliance to required specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of target accounts, opportunities, quotes, projects, contracts and correspondence in company provided databases.
  • Develop technical specifications, training material, instructions as required. Articulate technology to both business and technical users.
  • Resolve customer issues or difficulties in a manner that is consistent with TAPCO mission, values and financial objectives.
  • Provide design and technical development support to consultants, distributors, customers/end users.
  • Follows all Company rules, policies and procedures. Complies with federal, state and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; advising customers on product, service or equipment adherence to requirements; advising customers on needed actions.
  • Contributes to engineering effectiveness by identifying short-term and long-range issues that must be addressed; providing information and commentary pertinent to deliberations; recommending options and courses of action; implementing directives.
Required Experience and Knowledge/ Skills/Ability:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in applications engineering, product development, or technical sales
  • Experience with ITS systems, transportation industry not required but a plus
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and design-for-assembly
  • Electromechanical skillset
  • Proficient engineering documentation, and BOM management
  • Problem-solving, cost modeling abilities and good communication.
  • Familiar with general business software (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Understanding of routings, applying overhead rates (e.g., machine vs. labor), and ensuring accurate cost modeling to drive financial accountability.
  • Solidworks background not required but a plus
  • Strong understanding of electro-mechanical systems and manufacturing processes
  • Proven ability to develop practical, cost-effective solutions for complex applications
  • Strong cost modeling and quoting experience in an ETO environment
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and technical documentation tools
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate independently
  • Experience in solar applications and radio applications a plus
  • Strong verbal and communication skills
